Siemens Healthineers announced that the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has cleared the company’s Compressed Sensing magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) technology. Compressed Sensing slashes the long acquisition times associated with MRI to enable dramatically shortened scans. For example, cardiac cine imaging with Compressed Sensing can be completed in just 16 seconds rather than the traditional four minutes, courtesy of an algorithm that reduces the required amount of data.

In the first large-scale study of its kind, Dutch researchers demonstrated a strong linear relationship between decreased screening performance and volumetric breast density. Involving more than 110,000 mammograms from the Dutch Breast Screening Program (Foundation of Population Screening Mid-West), the study showed that increasing volumetric breast density, automatically measured by Volpara Density software, impacts mammography performance measures, such as sensitivity and the rates of recall, false positives and interval cancers.

February 17, 2017 — Accuray Inc. recently announced data from a prospective, Phase II, 17-center study which showed that treatment with the CyberKnife System for low- and intermediate-risk prostate cancer provides excellent long-term results. At five years, the disease-free survival rate for low-risk prostate cancer patients was 100 percent and for intermediate-risk patients was 88.5 percent. These results were maintained by patients followed for seven years.

Cerveau Technologies Inc. announced it has signed an agreement with Siemens’ PETNET Solutions Inc. that grants the company the right to manufacture [F-18]MK-6240, an early-stage investigational poistron emission tomography (PET) imaging agent. [F-18]MK-6240 is currently being evaluated to image neurofibrillary tangles (NFTs) in the brain. NFTs made up of aggregated tau protein are a hallmark of several neurodegenerative diseases, including Alzheimer’s disease.
