MRI Breast

Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) can be used for breast imaging as an alternative to mammography. About 50 percent of women have dense breast tissue, which makes detection of smaller cancers very difficult. MRI can be used a a supplemental screening technique in these patients to see through dense tissue. Contrast MRI imaging also clearly shows any areas of high metabolic uptake of contrast, making cancers light up as white dots on the MRI image. These can make cancer detection much easier, compared to a "snow storm" of white on standard mammography caiued by both cancer tissue and dense breast tissue.
