During the upcoming Healthcare Information and Management Systems Society Global Conference and Exhibition, HIMSS24, experts from the world’s largest government agencies will convene to focus on the future of public healthcare and the regulation of artificial intelligence (AI) and other emerging trends. February 26, 2024 — This year’s Healthcare Information and Management Systems Society HIMSS Global Conference and Exhibition, HIMSS24, is preparing to deliver a robust program featuring experts from the world’s largest government agencies discussing the future of public healthcare and the regulation of artificial intelligence (AI) and other emerging trends.

Conference planners and leadership behind HIMSS24, to be held March 11-15 in Orlando, FL, shared that influential leaders in global health policy will be sharing insights, predictions and expectations for the legislation and regulations shaping the future of healthcare. Featured speakers include health governmental leaders from both the U.S. and across the globe who will dive into the latest, emerging topics in health policy.

Featured Speakers

Featured speakers and background, as provided by HIMSS, include the following:

Greg Singleton, Chief Artificial Intelligence Officer (CAIO-HHS) at the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, HHS, will participate in a March 13 panel, “Exploring the Future: Unveiling the Global AI Policy Landscape in Healthcare.”

In his current role, Singleton leads efforts to promote strategic applications of AI and coordinates implementation of the Departmental AI strategy. He has served as the Senior Advisor to the HHS CIO and led program management and implementation for many of the national COVID-19 data systems.  Singleton joined HHS in 2017 to start the Health Sector Cybersecurity Coordination Center (HC3) which works to improve cybersecurity in the health sector. Before HHS, he worked at the Department of Energy as a Senior Advisor in the Secretary’s policy office.

Aisha Hasan, MBA, PMP, CSM, Head of Global Health IT at Office of the National Coordinator (ONC) for Health IT will present a lecture, “The Global Digital Health Partnership and the International Patient Summary,” on March 14 during HIMSS24.

Hasan has more than 14 years of experience with a portfolio in health IT, healthcare policy, government and business. She directs ONC’s global health IT efforts. She develops and leads the agency’s digital health international strategy, programs, investments, relationships and speaking, and represents the health IT policies, strategy, and standards equities of the U.S. in multi-lateral engagements with the U.S. government, countries, territories, and international organizations and alliances. She also she served as deputy director leading ONC’s Congressional affairs, finance and human capital, and also as the senior advisor to the national coordinator. She worked at various agencies where she executed on high-priority agency goals, including the HHS IOS, NIH, OASH and ASPR. She served at the White House at OMB and the Office of the United States Vice President. Previously, she worked as a health team senior advisor at Apple.

Herko Coomans, International Digital Health Coordinator at Ministry of Health, Welfare and Sport in the Netherlands, will also be part of the March 14 lecture, “The Global Digital Health Partnership and the International Patient Summary.”

A digital health policy coordinator, Coomans builds international alliances and partnerships at the Netherlands Ministry of Health, Welfare and Sport in The Hague. He spent 2013–2017 creating and enabling the National Health Information Council, the “whole system in the room,” a public-private governance council setting the course for patient access, interoperability and health information exchange in The Netherlands. He has 15 years’ experience with e-government development, but has found his heart is in digital health and innovation.

Andrea Fletcher, Chief Digital Strategy Officer and Director of the Digital Service at Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) will present, “Teaching the Elephant to Dance: Digital Transformation in the United States” on March 13 in an afternoon education session.

As the first person to hold this role, Fletcher also serves as the director of the digital service at CMS, an agency team of the United States Digital Service. The Digital Service at CMS (DSAC) was created in 2021 as a new unit within CMS to fundamentally change how the public interacts with the healthcare system through digital services. She is responsible for digital transformation and modernization efforts, promoting interoperability and public access to health data, and recruiting the next generation of technical talent into federal service. She has worked on digital health systems across more than 20 countries, primarily in sub-Saharan Africa. She has built mobile apps for healthcare workers, integrated biometric IDs into electronic health record systems, designed national-level interoperability layers, and deployed new disease surveillance systems making contributions to pandemic responses to Ebola, HIV and COVID-19.

Education Sessions

The Education Sessions, which HIMSS reports were selected through a highly competitive process, will also explore health policy, healthcare reform, regulation and legislation.

In addition, HIMSS24 Government Sessions will allow attendees to join experts from all levels of government to learn about current health information and technology-related public policy initiatives on AI, Medicare, information blocking, cybersecurity, and Congressional and state policy actions. These sessions will be offered throughout the conference week, according to HIMSS24 program planners.
