March 27, 2017 — Radiation therapists and physicians know that education can reduce anxiety before radiation treatment but lack a standardized tool. In an effort to solve this problem, a multidisciplinary team from Jefferson College of Health Professions and Sidney Kimmel Cancer Center at Thomas Jefferson University conducted a pilot study to see if a virtual environment education program could reduce some of the anxiety their patients face.

A new study offers hope for patients with recurrent lung cancer, who historically have been considered ineligible for curative treatment. In the largest analysis to date of re-irradiation using intensity-modulated proton therapy (IMPT) for lung and other thoracic tumors, more than three-fourths of patients were free from local recurrence at one year following retreatment, and fewer than one in ten patients experienced severe side effects. The study was presented at the 2017 Multidisciplinary Thoracic Cancers Symposium, March 14-16 in San Diego.

Medsquare announced the integration of the organ dose module VirtualDose CT into its DACS (dose archive and communication system) Radiation Dose Monitor (RDM) solution. Developed in partnership with Virtual Phantoms Inc., this new module will be added to RDM’s existing features. March 24, 2017 — Facing the reality of not having enough votes to secure its passage, House leadership withdrew the American Health Care Act (AHCA) from consideration one hour before the final vote was scheduled to begin. House Speaker Paul Ryan (R-Wis.) withdrew the bill on a directive from President Donald Trump, according to the Associated Press, after both men were unable to negotiate a compromise between ultra-conservative and moderate elements within the Republican Party.
