The National Comprehensive Cancer Network (NCCN) is collaborating with MedCurrent to integrate the NCCN Imaging Appropriate Use Criteria (NCCN Imaging AUC) into its clinical decision support (CDS) platform, OrderWise. The integration will allow access to imaging recommendations as derived from the NCCN Clinical Practice Guidelines in Oncology (NCCN Guidelines).

Utah-based healthcare technology company Novarad has recently received U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) 510(K) clearance of its MobileRad native iPad application, which is now available on the App Store.

Researchers from the Netherlands recently completed a study that explored the variation between radiologists when judging breast density visually on serially-acquired mammograms, and whether an automated density assessment would provide better consistency. Results of the study, “Consistency of breast density categories in serial screening mammograms: A comparison between automated and human assessment,” recently published in the Breast Journal, suggest that an automated computer measurement, VolparaDensity, provides better consistency than density readings performed visually by radiologists.

Gamma Medica announced that Henry Ford Health System (Detroit) has purchased Gamma Medica’s LumaGEM Molecular Breast Imaging system. The system is set to be installed by the end of 2016 at Henry Ford West Bloomfield Hospital. The MBI technology will be offered as a secondary screening and diagnostic tool following X-ray mammography, particularly for women with dense breast tissue. This will help improve cancer detection in women who are at greater risk of developing breast cancer.

Dicom Systems announced that the company was awarded a vendor neutral archive (VNA) contract to deploy its Unifier Enterprise Archive at Dental Information Systems Center (DISC), located in Joint Base San Antonio — Fort Sam Houston in San Antonio, Texas.

At one time, there wasn’t much risk in medical imaging. A federal program called Medicare Pass-Through used to pay hospitals for new equipment based on their percentages of Medicare patients.
