May 25, 2017 —The Royal College of Radiologists (RCR) has published a new edition of its guidance on the application and best practice of interventional oncology.

Interventional oncology is a fast-moving discipline that directly overlays the RCR’s two specialties of radiology and oncology; it concerns both the diagnosis and interventional treatment of cancer using image guidance techniques. The college’s original guidance, released in 2012, has been revisited to ensure clinicians remain up-to-date.

FDA says gadolinium retention in the brain is not a safety issue

A U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) review of the safety ramifications of gadolinium-based contrast agents for magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) has not identified adverse health affects from gadolinium retained in the brain. The FDA released a drug safety communication regarding all gadolinium-based contrast agents (GBCAs) earlier this week. 

A research team funded by the National Institute of Biomedical Imaging and Bioengineering (NIBIB) has engineered a small peptide that binds to a protein found in high-risk prostate cancers. By linking the peptide to a clinically used magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) contrast agent, the group used MRI to identify aggressive, metastatic tumors in mouse models of prostate cancer. The system is a promising step for reliable early detection and treatment of high-risk, life-threatening prostate cancer.

Fourteen members of the Society of Interventional Radiology (SIR) took to Capitol Hill recently to express the society’s support for a bill that would expand access to government-funded graduate medical education (GME) opportunities to newly recognized primary specialties, including interventional radiology.

Image Diagnostics Inc. (IDI) recently unveiled the Uni Diagnost, the first integrated multipurpose imaging table, light and camera platform at the American Urological Association (AUA) annual meeting, May 12-17 in Boston.

The University Medical Centre (UMC) Utrecht in the Netherlands recently treated the first patient as part of a clinical study with the Elekta Unity magnetic resonance radiation therapy (MR/RT) system. Elekta Unity is capable of delivering precisely targeted radiation doses and capturing MR images of diagnostic quality. It is the first time a patient has been treated on a state-of-the-art linear accelerator with a high-field MR imaging system, according to Elekta.

According to a new study, diagnostic radiologists on average serve more unique Medicare beneficiaries each year than any other specialty. The work, conducted by researchers at the Harvey L. Neiman Health Policy Institute, was presented at the American College of Radiology annual meeting, May 21-25 in Washington D.C.
