New research suggests a high coronary artery calcium score puts people at greater risk not only for heart and vascular disease but also for cancer, chronic kidney disease and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). The research was part of a 10-year follow-up study of more than 6,000 people who underwent heart computed tomography (CT) scans.

March 9, 2016 — Hitachi Medical Corp. and Redlen Technologies Inc., a Canadian technology company, announced an agreement to jointly develop a direct conversion semiconductor X-ray detector module required for new photon counting computed tomography systems (PCCT), a promising next-generation diagnostic medical imaging modality.

The use of diabetes treatment, whether by diet or pills such as metformin, decreases mammographic density (MD), one of the strongest risk factors for breast cancer, whereas taking insulin appears to increase it. These findings were part of a presentation at the 10th European Breast Cancer Conference.

March 9, 2016 — Radiotherapy to the whole breast is standard treatment after breast-conserving surgery for women with early breast cancer, even those who have a low risk of the disease returning in the breast (local relapse). However, whole breast radiotherapy can cause changes in the appearance of the breast, which may also be firmer and tender to the touch, resulting in psychological distress.

March 9, 2016 — Japanese business magazine Nikkei Asian Review reported Wednesday that Canon has been named the winning bidder for the acquisition of Toshiba Medical Systems. As the winning bidder, Canon has exclusive rights to negotiate until March 18 for a majority stake in the company. The winning bid was reportedly valued at $6.21 billion.
