August 22, 2016 — A new study found patients who tested negative for lung cancer by low-dose helical computed tomography (LDCT) but later went on to develop lung cancer within the following two years had poorer outcomes than patients who initially had a non-cancerous positive LDCT screen. The study was conducted by researchers at Moffitt Cancer Center

Researchers at the University of California San Diego School of Medicine have found that a form of magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) corresponds with histological responses in patients with nonalcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH). The MRI technique in question non-invasively measures fat density in the liver.

August 19, 2016 — Early-stage breast cancer patients receiving a shorter course of whole breast radiation with higher radiation doses per fraction reported equivalent cosmetic, functional and pain outcomes over time as those receiving a longer, lower-dose per fraction course of treatment. These findings were derived from research from The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center.

August 19, 2016 — A new non-invasive positron emission tomography (PET) technique can obtain images of neuron proliferation in an area of the brain known to be particularly affected by depression. Scientists from the RIKEN Center for Life Science Technology (CLST) in Japan used the technique to observe this process, known as neurogenesis, in the subventricular zone and subgranular zone of the hippocampal dentate gyrus.

The detonation of atomic bombs over the Japanese cities of Hiroshima and Nagasaki in August 1945 resulted in horrific casualties and devastation.

Hitachi Asia Ltd. and Hitachi Ltd. announced that Hitachi Asia has received an order for a proton beam therapy (PBT) system from the National Cancer Centre Singapore (NCCS), including a 10-year service and maintenance agreement. It will be the first proton beam therapy system in Southeast Asia.
