If we are to look forward to the development of smartphone technology for radiology applications, we might do well to look at virtual and augmented realities. For decades, radiology has fiddled with these.

Samsung announced recently that The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center in Houston added BodyTom CT, the world’s first portable, full-body, 32-slice computed tomography (CT) scanner to its Proton Therapy Center. The center is now treating patients using images from the scanner as part of the process.

September 28, 2016 – Addressing the educational needs of an underserved and growing population, DenseBreast-info.org now provides two key Patient resource tools in Spanish, a Breast Cancer Risk Checklist and a Patient Brochure. The website addresses questions women and their healthcare providers often have about breast density – helping them to "Get Smart about Being Dense."

Survival rates for elderly patients receiving stereotactic body radiation therapy (SBRT) for early-stage non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) rose from roughly 40 to 60 percent over the past decade, concurrent with the increasing adoption of SBRT, according to new research. The research was presented at the 58th Annual Meeting of the American Society for Radiation Oncology (ASTRO), Sept. 25-28 in Boston.

September 27, 2016 — For men with early stage, low-risk prostate cancer, hypofractionated radiation therapy (RT) offers comparable health-related quality of life outcomes in one-third less treatment time than conventional RT, according to new research. The research was presented at the 58th Annual Meeting of the American Society for Radiation Oncology (ASTRO), Sept. 25-28 in Boston.

September 27, 2016 — Carestream Health announced that it will be displaying a wide range of products at the 2016 Annual Meeting of the Radiological Society of North America (RSNA), Nov. 27-Dec. 2 in Chicago. Featured products will include:

For patients who have cancer that has metastasized to the brain, stereotactic radiosurgery (SRS) results in statistically comparable survival rates, reduced cognitive decline and better quality of life (QOL), compared to whole brain radiotherapy (WBRT). These findings were drawn from research presented at the 58th Annual Meeting of the American Society for Radiation Oncology (ASTRO), Sept. 25-28 in Boston.

Elekta announced that it has expanded its partnership with Radiating Hope, a volunteer organization that provides radiation equipment to resource-constrained countries. The organization also educates medical physics and radiation oncology personnel in those countries to help better serve their patient populations.

In the largest study of its kind to date, researchers have identified and validated three distinct molecular subtypes of prostate cancer that correlate with distant metastasis-free survival. Identifying these subtypes can assist in future research to determine how patients will respond to treatment, according to research presented at the 58th Annual Meeting of the American Society for Radiation Oncology (ASTRO). Findings represent a step toward the implementation of personalized medicine in prostate cancer care.

RaySearch and Mevion Medical Systems are extending their collaboration agreement to support the RayCare oncology information system (OIS), currently in development at RaySearch, and to take full advantage of the advanced treatment capabilities of the Mevion S250i with Hyperscan and Adaptive Aperture. The agreement was announced at the 58th annual meeting of the American Society for Radiation Oncology (ASTRO) in Boston.
