Intelerad Medical Systems, a medical imaging picture archiving and communication systems (PACS), radiology information systems (RIS) and workflow solutions company, announced the launch of InteleRIS 8.224, the latest version of its reporting information system.

Seno Medical Instruments, Inc., the company pioneering opto-acoustic imaging as a tool to improve the process of diagnosing breast cancer, today announced preliminary information from a feasibility study of its Imagio breast imaging device. Results from the feasibility study suggest that information from Imagio, beyond that available from traditional breast ultrasound, may be helpful in assisting physicians in their decisions whether to recommend biopsies for women with suspicious breast masses. The data were presented at the annual meeting of the Radiological Society of America (RSNA).

The American College of Radiology (ACR) strongly supports the Excellence in Diagnostic Imaging Utilization Act of 2013 (H.R. 3705), which would require ordering physicians to  consult physician-developed appropriateness criteria when ordering advanced diagnostic imaging studies for Medicare patients. This ACR backed bipartisan bill is separate from, and in addition to, a similar appropriateness criteria policy included in the SGR Repeal and Medicare Beneficiary Access Act of 2013, currently under debate in the House and Senate. Congress will likely consider these bills in early 2014.

As breast density becomes a more recognized risk factor for breast cancer, Royal Philips announced 510(k) clearance from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for the Spectral Breast Density Measurement Application for its MicroDose SI full-field digital mammography (FFDM) system. The application is the first spectral Breast Density Measurement tool, meaning adipose (fat) and glandular tissue can be differentiated to accurately measure volumetric breast density.
