The first applications of and even the term radiosurgery were the idea of Swedish neurosurgeon Lars Leksell, which he published in a seminar article in 1951. Leksell was looking for a minimally invasive way to destroy small tumors and vascular malformations within the skull using radiation.
SBRT is similarly capable of delivering a large, but very precise, dose of radiation through the use of arcs or non-coplanar beams intersecting at the tumor. The accuracy allows clinicians to reduce treatment margins and maximally spare critical normal tissue (including rectum, bladder, urethra and penile bulb) from the high-dose treatment field.
Historically, advanced visualization systems have been rigid, “one size fits all” products. However, recent developments have enabled fully customizable protocols and user interfaces, ensuring the system adapts to each user’s workflow.

July 15, 2011 — In a true hybrid suite, both cath lab and open surgical procedures are performed in a single room. In creating hybrid cath labs, healthcare facilities require imaging technologies that provide the flexibility to quickly and easily access both the patient and ancillary equipment. Arnold Palmer Hospital for Children in Orlando, Fla., a leading children’s hospital, recently installed Toshiba America Medical Systems Inc.’s Infinix CF-i bi-plane system with the CAT-880B hybrid catheterization table for its new dedicated hybrid suite. When combining the five-axis positioner of the Infinix-i system with the tilting and cradling features of the hybrid table, physicians are able to obtain optimal image angles while having unprecedented patient access.

July 14, 2011 — A jury in federal district court has returned a guilty verdict against Rajashakher P. Reddy, M.D., 41, of Atlanta, on charges of wire fraud, mail fraud, health care fraud and obstruction of justice. Reddy, a radiologist who ran the Atlanta-based radiology practice Reddy Solutions Inc., was charged with and found guilty of perpetrating a scheme to defraud various hospitals by signing and submitting tens of thousands of radiology reports without even reviewing many of the X-rays, mammograms, computed tomography (CT) scans and other films that were the subjects of the reports.
July 13, 2011 – By providing a mobile computed tomography (CT) scan unit free of charge to Chicago's The Field Museum for a series of mummy scans this month, Genesis Medical Imaging, Inc. has helped discover ancient secrets and opened the door to new mysteries. Field scientists were surprised to find only a skull and legs inside the wrappings of one Egyptian mummy and the baskets of four Peruvian specimens simply empty, with no mummies inside. Yet it was all instructive for the museum's researchers, who after several days of scanning objects more than 2,000 years old are more certain of what their collection actually holds.
July 13, 2011 – Somatom Definition AS Open–a high-end computed tomography (CT) system that can efficiently cover the needs of both diagnostic radiology and radiation therapy–has been cleared by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA). Delivering excellent image quality at low dose, the Definition AS Open enables exact contouring for planning while minimizing exposure to the patient. The scanner, manufactured by Siemens Healthcare, also has several unique service offerings and is upgradeable for multipurpose use.
