Nucletron released three new products designed to improve brachytherapy practice.

Designed for use in brachytherapy treatment of small superficial malignancies, the new Valencia Applicator features a patented flattening filter that is designed to ensure a higher degree of dose homogeneity than previously possible with surface applicators.

The new Source Position Check Ruler, with GAFChromic film, is a quality assurance (QA) tool that reportedly sets proper calibration and operation of a Nucletron brachytherapy system prior to usage for optimal patient treatment.

Hitachi’s HI VISION 5500 ultrasound system, found in Radiology departments and diagnostic imaging centers, can also be configured to apply its high resolution imaging to prostate Brachytherapy planning and guidance. The system’s reportedly advanced imaging features work in concert with its bi-plane Brachytherapy probe to create detailed images of the prostate.

IsoRay Medical Inc.’s Proxcelan is a seed used in low dose radiation (LDR) permanent brachytherapy for prostate cancer. The reportedly fast-acting, high-energy medical isotope has demonstrated strong clinical results and is being heralded as the first leap forward in seed brachytherapy in 20 years.

Enova is releasing its new IRIS Solo 50 and IRIS Solo 100 Cordless Surgical Headlights in May of 2008. The Solo 50 reportedly delivers light output at 50,000 lux, while the Solo 100 generates light output at 100,000 lux, each with a single LED and a single reflector.

The Ritter 355 Minor Surgery Light is designed to be affordable and was made counterbalanced to provide positioning without drifting. The light was made to be easily movable for clinicians. Designed with a color temperature of 4,200K, the light system provides a whiter light and a true representation of tissue color – with less heat, making it reportedly cool to the touch. The Ritter 355 is available in five-caster and single or dual ceiling mount versions.

VersaLights single-use surgical device by Lumitex Medical Devices is reportedly five times brighter, as well as more affordable, than competitors.

The VersaLight reportedly has more uniform spot light, designed to improve visibility in deep-cavity surgery. VersaLights’s cable management system features spiral wrap-arounds, which are designed to keep multiple cables and tubing bundled together.
The VersaLight has a 4-in-1 design, using suction, irrigation, retraction and light, attaching easily OR equipment, said the company.

MediNotes Corp. released its latest version of its Web-based integrated electronic medical record (EHR) practice management (PM) solution MediNotes Clinician Spring R2.

MediNotes offers e-prescribing, patient portals, patient kiosks, image management. Among the new upgrades to MediNotes include payment links, electronic billing of secondary claims, an inventory control module, and a lab report sorting function.

RES-Q Healthcare Systems demonstrated its Patient Waiting Room View at AONE 2008. Similar to airline flight displays at airports, it shows an abbreviated patient identifier (first two letters of the last name and first name initial), the surgeon’s name, the procedure, surgery start and completion times and current status (patient in OR, surgery in process, patient in recovery).

Integra LifeSciences Holdings Corp. introduced the next generation of MAYFIELD titanium skull pins designed for use with the MAYFIELD cranial stabilization system to maintain the stability of a patient’s head during brain surgery. The skull pins have FDA clearance and CE Mark Certification in Europe.

eVent Medical recently said it received FDA 510(k) clearance for its Heliox gas delivery system for use with its Inspiration ventilator system.
