Breast Density Reporting Advances on National and State Levels

On the same day that Wisconsin state representatives introduced a new bill mandating patient notification of breast density, both chambers of Congress revived the national Breast Density and Mammography Reporting Act which was first drafted in 2013.

October 27, 2017 — Racial/ethnic disparities in cancer survival in the U.S. are well documented, but the underlying causes are not well understood. To better explain disparities, researchers examined cancer survival by racial/ethnic group for 877,662 patients diagnosed with breast, prostate, colorectal or lung cancer between 2000–2013 using California Cancer Registry data.

A study that integrated robust smoking cessation programs into an organized low-dose computed tomography (LDCT) lung cancer screening program found that the inclusion of both interventions has the potential to decrease mortality rates while being relatively cost-effective. William Evans, M.D., of McMaster University in Canada presented these findings at the International Association for the Study of Lung Cancer (IASLC) 18th World Conference on Lung Cancer (WCLC), Oct. 15-18 in Yokohama, Japan.

Scientists at Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis, working with collaborators in Sri Lanka, have shown that a portable scanning device can measure limb enlargement and disfigurement faster and more easily in patients with elephantiasis. The research tool makes it easy to obtain accurate measurements and determine whether treatments to reduce swelling are effective.
