The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has cleared three modules of AI-Rad Companion Chest CT, an intelligent software assistant from Siemens Healthineers that brings artificial intelligence (AI) to computed tomography (CT). They include the AI-Rad Companion Engine (K183272), Pulmonary (K183271) and Cardiovascular (K183268) modules. Representing the first intelligent assistant of the new AI-Rad Companion platform, AI-Rad Companion Chest CT helps radiologists interpret images of the thorax (chest) quickly with desired accuracy and precision, and automatically documents these findings as structured reports.

Cardiac magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) analysis can be performed significantly faster with similar precision to experts when using automated machine learning, according to new research. The study was published in Circulation: Cardiovascular Imaging, an American Heart Association journal.

The Steadman Clinic has added Canon Medical Systems USA Inc.’s Vantage Galan 3T magnetic resonance (MR) system to the orthopedic clinic’s Frisco, Colo., location.

A UCLA-led study has found that using three-dimensional virtual reality (VR) models to prepare for kidney tumor surgeries resulted in substantial improvements, including shorter operating times, less blood loss during surgery and a shorter stay in the hospital afterward.

Whole breast radiation and partial breast radiation following a lumpectomy yield similar cosmetic outcomes for women diagnosed with early stages of cancer who wish to preserve their breasts. Findings of the new analysis from a phase III clinical trial were presented at the 61st Annual Meeting of the American Society for Radiation Oncology (ASTRO), Sept. 15-18, 2019, in Chicago.

Siemens Healthineers and national nonprofit HealthyWomen announced results from a new national survey designed to deepen understanding on how to improve women’s experiences with screening mammograms for breast cancer detection. The survey, which included responses from women over age 40 (all of whom fall under the recommended screening guidelines), revealed that while 61 percent of women said mammograms are necessary, 52 percent found them uncomfortable and 25 percent regarded them as painful.

Patients with brain metastases who received whole-brain radiotherapy that avoided memory-specific hippocampal neural stem cells experienced preserved cognitive function, according to results from an NRG Oncology clinical trial. Those patients also reported fewer neurologic symptoms and better cognition over time. The results were presented at the 2019 American Society for Radiation Oncology (ASTRO) Annual Meeting, Sept. 15-18 in Chicago.

August 29, 2019 — The American Society for Radiation Oncology (ASTRO) announced the top-rated studies being highlighted at the 2019 ASTRO Annual Meeting, Sept. 15 - 18 in Chicago. These presentations are being highlighted with press conferences.

Presentations Sunday, Sept. 15:

A randomized clinical trial of targeted, high-dose radiation for men with oligometastatic prostate cancer has shown the treatment to be an effective and safe option for patients who wish to delay hormone-suppression therapy. The phase II trial found that radiation therapy can generate an immune system response not previously believed possible in this type of cancer. Findings were presented at the 61st Annual Meeting of the American Society for Radiation Oncology (ASTRO), Sept. 15-18, 2019, in Chicago.

Fujifilm SonoSite Inc. and the Allen Institute of Artificial Intelligence (AI2) Incubator, builder of AI-first startups, announced a collaboration to interpret ultrasound images with AI, enabling new ultrasound applications and enhanced accuracy. Fujifilm SonoSite has enlisted assistance from the AI2 Incubator to deploy deep learning models on portable ultrasound products. Together, the AI2 Incubator and Fujifilm SonoSite will work to improve image analysis, allowing for the interpretation of a much wider range of ultrasound scenarios.
