March 29, 2010 - Leaders in pediatric imaging will highlight the unique concerns associated with the imaging of children, and steps manufacturers can take to reduce radiation exposure to patients, at the U.S. Food and Drug Administration Public Meeting: Device Improvement to Reduce Unnecessary Radiation Exposure from Medical Imaging March 30-31 in Gaithersburg, Md.
Marilyn Goske, M.D., chair of the Alliance for Radiation Safety in Pediatric Imaging and Silverman chair for Radiology Education at Cincinnati Children’s Medical Center, will lead the discussion on pediatric imaging, which will include with several key members of the Image Gently Steering Committee (Image Gentlysm).
The purpose of the meeting is to discuss steps that could be taken by manufacturers of devices used in CT and fluoroscopy that would reduce unnecessary patient exposure to ionizing radiation during CT and fluoroscopic procedures.
The committee will discuss how manufacturers should incorporate in CT scanners and fluoroscopes to reduce unnecessary exposure. On the second day, they will focus on steps manufacturers should take to improve training of individuals who use these devices and steps to improve quality assurance at medical imaging facilities with respect to these two modalities.
