May 7, 2007 - Data presented at the Pediatric Academic Societies' Annual Meeting demonstrate that premature infants with neonatal Respiratory Distress Syndrome (RDS) have a nearly 20 percent better chance of survival if they are treated with Curosurf (poractant alfa) Intratracheal Suspension rather than either of two competing surfactant therapies.

May 7, 2007 - InnerSpace announced the availability of three new small diameter scope cabinets that are ideal for storing bronchoscopes, cystoscopes, ureteroscopes and other small diameter flexible endoscopes.

Two free-standing cabinets are offered in either powder-coated metal or melamine, along with a wall-mounted powder coated metal cabinet. The cabinets house up to five small diameter scopes.

May 2, 2007 - Xoft Inc. announced at the 8th Annual Meeting of the American Society of Breast Surgeons that the first breast cancer patients have been treated using the Axxent Electronic Brachytherapy System. The early stage breast cancer treatment uses a miniaturized X-ray source that can deliver localized and targeted radiation treatment in virtually any clinical setting under the supervision of a radiation oncologist.

The consumer advice issued Thursday reflects the fact that the science behind it is unclear. Whether widespread use of masks will help, or harm, during the next worldwide flu outbreak is a question that researchers are studying furiously.

May 4, 2007 - Draeger Medical has introduced the Carinahome, an invasive and noninvasive ventilator designed to support a patient's ongoing condition away from clinical settings.

The full-access interface shows both pressure and flow curves while a monitoring screen reportedly enables patients to adjust predetermined settings according to their personal needs.

The Carinahome features low noise levels during operation, an auto-dimming screen and energy-saving capabilities. Optional accessories, such as a DC input allow the ventilator to be used in the car.

May 4, 2007 - Hospital employment climbed to 4.5 million workers in April, a one-month increase of about 0.1 percent, or 6,600 employees, according to seasonally adjusted, preliminary figures from the Bureau of Labor Statistics. For the year ended in April, hospital payrolls rose by roughly 2.2 percent, or 95,700 workers.

Physician-office employment increased to 2.21 million workers in April, a bump of around 0.3 percent, or 7,100 employees. For the 12 months ended in April, physician-office employment climbed about 3.5 percent, or 74,000 workers.

May 3, 2007 - CMS, Inc., is currently testing and set to release Monaco, its next-generation Intensity Modulated Radiotherapy Treatment (IMRT) planning system, which in addition to a conventional dose-based optimization platform, will offer a biological model for more accurate and precise planning to account for tissue and volume-specific dose tolerances.
