Patients' perceptions of quality varied by race, ethnicity, and type of insurance.

August 13, 2007 — The National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, part of the National Institutes of Health, has awarded a UCLA research team a five-year, $9 million contract to fund a multicenter study investigating antibiotic treatments for MRSA, a staph infection seen increasingly in communities across the nation that is resistant to antibiotics most commonly used to treat skin infections.

August 13, 2007 - According to study results published in the Journal of Academic Radiology, Breast-Specific Gamma Imaging (BSGI) provides higher sensitivity for the detection of Ductal Carcinoma In Situ (DCIS) than mammography or MRI and can reliably detect small, sub centimeter lesions.

August 10, 2007 – FASA has announced that their Outcomes Monitoring Project now includes eight new clinical benchmarks.

Based on recommendations by the ASC Quality Collaboration, the new clinical benchmarks include:
1. Patient burns
2. Wrong site surgery
3. Retained foreign objects
4. Patient death
5. Patient falls
6. Medical device failure
7. Return to surgery
8. On-time prophylactic IV antibiotic administration.

August 10, 2007 - A study published this week in the August 11th issue of the journal The Lancet concludes that screening using Breast magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) could help improve the ability to diagnose breast cancer early, while it is still classified as “ductal carcinoma in situ” (DCIS), and prevent its progression to invasive cancer.

August 9, 2007 – The Caring for Carcinoid Foundation (CFCF) hopes to co-host the 2007 Carcinoid Research Summit with the National Cancer Institute (NCI).
Through their "Move Toward a Cure" Campaign, CFCF led the carcinoid/NET community to voice support for Congressional legislation. The campaign proved highly successful, resulting in hundreds of letters to 80 U.S. Senators and 83 U.S. Representatives.
