August 15, 2007 - Dr. Poul Sorensen led a group of BC Cancer Agency scientists in the discovery of a novel gene that suppresses the growth of human tumors in multiple cancers, including breast, lung, and liver cancers, as well as melanomas, lymphomas and sarcomas.

August 15, 2007 - The National Conference of State Legislators (NCSL) held their Annual Meeting from Aug. 6-9 in Boston, MA, at which AAASC exhibited with the goal of interacting with state legislators and their staff and educating them on the benefits of ASCs and the importance of physician ownership.

August 15, 2007 - Performing cardiac CTA after coronary artery bypass surgery (CABG) can reveal unsuspected and potentially significant findings beyond the heart, according to a recent study conducted by researchers at the University of Maryland School of Medicine, located in Baltimore, MD.

August 15, 2007 - Merit Medical Systems Inc., a leading manufacturer and marketer of proprietary disposable devices used primarily in cardiology and radiology procedures, announced today that it has acquired the exclusive distribution rights for microcatheters from GMA Co., Ltd. with the rights over all North American, South American and European markets, as well as Middle Eastern and Asian markets.

August 15, 2007 – MIT recently developed a new imaging technique that reportedly allows scientists to create the first 3D images of a living cell, using a method similar to the X-ray CT scans doctors use to see inside the body.

The technique, described in a paper published in the Aug. 12 online edition of Nature Methods, could be used to produce the most detailed images yet of what goes on inside a living cell without the help of fluorescent markers or other externally added contrast agents.

Verathon has introduced the GlideScope Cobalt Single-Use Video Laryngoscope, which enables fast intubations and eliminates time-consuming disinfection procedures. The new scope provides a clear, real-time view of a patient’s airway, making it ideal for use in the ED, as well as for OR and ICU applications.
The GlideScope Cobalt’s design is based on the GlideScope reusable video laryngoscope that, according to the company, achieves a Cormack-Lehane Grade I or Grade II view 99 percent of the time.

The newly launched Universal Mammotome MR Biopsy System from Ethicon Endo-Surgery is compatible with a wider range of breast coils and magnets and can work with most grid/cube location systems, the most common method of MR lesion targeting.
The Mammotome MR Universal Targeting Set is designed for fast and easy set up, can be used with most grid localization systems and its imageable aperture allows physicians to visually verify the placement of the probe relative to the targeted lesions.

The Codonics Virtua XR Medical Disc Publisher is the world’s fastest medical disc recording system, according to its manufacturer. The Virtua XR burns one disc a minute, over 60 CDs or 30 DVDs in an hour.
The Virtua XR is designed for high-volume imaging applications, such as breast MR, PET/CT, MRA and CTA, and is the only CD/DVD recorder that keeps pace with multimodality environments where imaging systems send tens of thousands of images every hour.

CIVCO Medical Solutions’ new carbon fiducial markers reportedly optimize imaging characteristics for emerging IGRT modalities such as kV imaging and cone-beam CT.
CIVCO’s carbon markers reportedly produce clearly identifiable images with now widely available kV imagers, providing enhanced resolution with low-density materials. The new markers may also eliminate artifacts in CT scans.

The FUJIFILM Medical Systems USA Inc. end-to-end system for digital mammography, includes its full-field digital mammography (FFDM) system Fuji Computed Radiography for Mammography (FCRm) and multimodality Synapse PACS.

FCRm provides superior image quality and presents mammography providers with various equipment configurations to ideally suit their needs, according to the manufacturer. Facilities can select from a centrally located multiplate reader serving several rooms, or a single-plate reader installed right in each exam room.
