December 3, 2007 - Treating throat cancer with intensity modulated radiation therapy (IMRT) can improve the health-related quality of life of patients compared to conventional radiation therapy (CRT), according to a study in the December issue of the International Journal for Radiation Oncology*Biology*Physics, the official journal of the American Society for Therapeutic Radiology and Oncology.

December 3, 2007 - Composiflex, a global supplier of highly-engineered composite products, has expanded its manufacturing and design capabilities to produce patient positioning systems that are reportedly well suited for use with MRI diagnostic technology.

The vast majority of composite patient positioning products in the market today are manufactured using carbon fiber, which is primarily applicable for use with CT scan and X-ray technologies, but not with MRI equipment.

GE’s new Signa Vibrant is a dedicated 1.5T breast MR scanner using HD technology and applications specifically designed for breast MR, including: VIBRANT acquisition, BREASE spectroscopy, integrated CADstream (manufactured by Confirma) and a specially designed breast MR patient table that aims to provide optimal imaging and outstanding access for intervention.

To help improve public awareness and knowledge of breast cancer, GE will apply a portion of the proceeds from Signa Vibrant sales toward breast cancer education and awareness programs.

November 30, 2007 - The Temperature Product Group of Measurement Specialties (MEAS) offers a new range of miniature radial and axial thermistors, hermetically sealed devices for air-flow and liquid-flow sensing applications.

The thermisters offer high stability over temperature ranges not normally associated with NTC Thermistors, operating between -50°C to 250°C. The company says the glass seal provides a high degree of protection from severe environmental exposures such as high humidity applications.

November 30, 2007 - Healthmark Industries Inc. and Wipak Medical acquired Kimberly-Clark Health Care’s peel pouch business this week.

Wipak produces flexible packaging, including peel pouches. Healthmark is a leading supplier of products for central sterilization, including sterilization packaging and accessories.

The acquisition will allow Healthmark and Wipak to establish a broader line of sterilization packaging in the market while allowing Kimberly-Clark to focus on innovation in the rest of its line of clinically preferred medical devices and supplies

November 30, 2007 - Cardinal Health said this week it is partnering with nine hospitals across the country to help simplify how medications are purchased and dispensed to patients.

The hospitals, including Lahey Clinic Medical Center, Memorial Hermann, Nebraska Medical Center, Ochsner Medical Center, Oregon Health and Science University, St Joseph’s Orange, and SSM St. Anthony Hospital, will leverage Cardinal Health technologies, services and expertise to improve their hospitals’ processes for medication management.

November 30, 2007 - A former president and CEO of an international producer of medical devices will serve as the executive director of the Alfred Mann Institute for Biomedical Development at Purdue University.

Today Purdue and Purdue Research Foundation officials named John C. Hertig, the former president and CEO of Enpath Medical Inc., will be the institute's inaugural executive director. The Purdue engineering alumnus begins his duties on Monday, Dec. 3.

November 30, 2007 - In the fight against deadly Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA), which responds poorly to conventional antibiotic treatment, NovaBay Pharmaceuticals Inc. is developing an anti-infective, but technically not an antibiotic.

The company recently announced results from a Phase I clinical trial with its NVC-422, whose trade name is AgaNase, which is a new compound with reportedly has potent activity against numerous pathogens, including MRSA.

December 1, 2007 — iCAD Inc. and GE Healthcare will develop a customized version of iCAD’s SecondLook Digital, a computer-aided detection (CAD) solution for mammography, specific to GE’s Senographe and Seno Advantage systems designed to enhance the overall clinical performance with Senographe and Seno Advantage systems.

The new version of SecondLook is intended to specifically improve sensitivity to breast cancer imaging, enhancing usability and workflow as well as providing diagnostic support tools.

December 1, 2007 – Emageon Inc. highlighted at RSNA 2007 enhancements to its “vendor neutral” image sharing PACS and announced a new cardiology/radiology workstation will be introduced in 2008.
