Fluke Biomedical, a manufacturer of biomedical test instruments, acquired Unfors RaySafe. Unfors RaySafe produces quality assurance devices for diagnostic x-ray including real time dose monitoring systems for medical personnel and patient dose tracking software solutions.
Adults with low-grade gliomas who received a chemotherapy regimen following completion of radiation therapy lived longer than patients who received radiation therapy alone. This is according to long-term follow-up results from a National Institutes of Health-supported randomized controlled clinical trial.
Better management of X-ray radiation doses starts with recording and tracking each exposure patients receive. Dose tracking has come to the forefront of medicine in recent years with the realization that medical imaging has doubled the public’s exposure to ionizing radiation since the 1980s, largely due to the rapid expansion of computed tomography (CT) and minimally invasive procedures guided by angiography.

Advancements in technologies are paving the way for many healthcare providers to connect with patients outside their hospitals more quickly and efficiently. For cardiology departments, technologies that allow for video collaboration, rapid transmission of scans and images and other forms of telemedicine are supporting the initiative to improve productivity, an initiative many are striving for as the U.S. healthcare landscape continues reform.
At Johnston Medical Center in Smithfield N.C., StatVideo’s EchoCart streams real-time images of babies’ hearts and live video conferencing over the web to pediatric cardiologists at Duke Children’s Hospital. EchoCart is a telemedicine system designed specifically for tele-echocardiography.

The American College of Radiology (ACR) strongly supports the bicameral, bipartisan legislation to replace the sustainable growth rate (SGR) payment formula. The organization particularly applauds inclusion of several ACR backed provisions that raise quality of care, make care more efficient and increase transparency in physician payment policy.
The topic of radiation safety and radiation dose monitoring has moved from state-specific regulations to a national trend with The Joint Commission’s (TJCs) recent announcement of their “New and Revised Diagnostic Imaging Standards.” The call for dose management and tracking has graduated from being advised to being mandated – from both a legal perspective and from within the world of healthcare’s patient safety foundation. The question that many organizations find themselves asking is “Where does this leave me?” and “Are we prepared for compliance?”
Initial results from a research study reveal that proton radiation therapy can successfully treat metastases to the liver. The research is being conducted at Loma Linda University Medical Center’s (LLUMC) James M. Slater, M.D., Proton Treatment and Research Center.

Digital mammography screening with photon-counting technique offers high diagnostic performance, according to a study published online in the journal Radiology. As mammography screening has shifted to digital technology, a range of computed radiography (CR) and direct radiography (DR) systems have emerged. The photon-counting technique is a DR approach that uses a detector to decrease scattered radiation and noise, enabling dose reduction.
Ultrasound-guided biopsies miss prostate cancers that are detected by the slightly more expensive and slightly more invasive 3-D mapping biopsies. A 2006 study compared ultrasound-guided biopsy of 180 men diagnosed with early stage prostate cancer to 3-D mapping biopsy. The study showed nearly a quarter of patients were upgraded to a more clinically significant stage of disease after 3-D mapping found pockets of cancer missed by the first technique. A University of Colorado Cancer Center study reports the locations of these most-missed pockets of prostate cancer.
Ziehm Imaging received U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) clearance to market its new generation Ziehm Vision RFD C-arm for pediatric and other interventional operating room procedures. The Ziehm Vision RFD C-arm offers fully motorized movement on four axes to maximize image quality while minimizing procedural dose. It was cleared for a range of image procedures including specific intended uses in pediatric imaging.
VuComp received U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) premarket approval (PMA) of the M-Vu CAD Version 3 system for digital mammography. This generation of CAD technology intends to lower false positive rates. The company upgraded all M-Vu users’ systems with M-Vu CAD Version 3 at no charge.

GlobalMed’s CapSure Cloud application can eliminate a second radiation dose by making an initial CT scan available to all healthcare providers involved in a patient’s care. Once the images are uploaded to the secure cloud imaging server from the originating hospital, the sign-on information can be shared with specialists at the receiving hospital so they can view the study. In emergency cases, this means the team at the receiving hospital can be prepared for the patient’s arrival and go directly to the OR.
Bayland Digital offers free film digitizing of X-rays, CTs, MRIs, ultrasounds, mammograms and other medical films. This process can save money while also freeing up space for other hospital resources and preserving medical imagery.
