I recently attended the 2016 Annual Meeting of the Society of Nuclear Medicine and Molecular Imaging (SNMMI) in San Diego. This year’s meeting included a celebration of the 40th anniversary of FDG, a radiopharmaceutical used in the medical imaging modality positron emission tomography (PET) that has had a pervasive impact on molecular imaging. At the opening plenary session, the Henry Wagner Lecture was given by Joanna Fowler, Ph.D., Brookhaven National Laboratory, on “Designing and Synthesizing FDG for the First Human Studies in 1976.” Signage throughout the convention center featured FDG pioneers and quotes on FDG by past presidents.

IBA (Ion Beam Applications S.A.) and the Institute Curie in Paris, France, announced the signature of an agreement for the manufacturing, delivery, installation and maintenance of a new research beam line. This line will be connected to the existing beam transport line. This agreement also includes future research projects to be performed jointly by the two organizations over the coming 10 years.

July 5, 2016 — A study appearing in the July 5 issue of JAMA assessed the association between gadolinium exposure and parkinsonism, a degenerative disorder of the central nervous system characterized by tremor and impaired muscular coordination. The study was conducted by Blayne Welk, M.D., M.Sc., of Western University, London, Canada, and colleagues.

Helium is essential for many modern technologies, including magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scanners. Now, researchers have developed systematic search methods to discover one of the world’s biggest helium gas fields, associated with volcanoes in the Tanzanian Rift Valley in Africa.
