MAY 8, 2007 - GE Healthcare launched the Voluson e system, a compact ultrasound system specifically designed for uses in labor and delivery, gynecological exams and studies and assisted reproductive medicine, at the 55th Annual Clinical Meeting of the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG) May 7-9 in San Diego.

May 8, 2007 - Siemens Medical Solutions Ultrasound Division will introduce the 5.0 release of their ACUSON Antares ultrasound platform at the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists Annual Meeting in San Diego, May 5-9, as it upgrades the line to deliver new workflow-enhancing ultrasound applications for OB/GYN and breast imaging.

May 8, 2007 - Toshiba America Medical Systems Inc. announced yesterday that it has installed its first Vantage powered by Atlas 1.5T magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) system at Steinberg Diagnostic Medical Imaging (SDMI), an imaging center located in Las Vegas, NV.

The Vantage Atlas, Toshiba's newest MRI system, was launched at the Radiological Society of North America (RSNA) annual meeting in November, 2006 and features a major redesign of the Toshiba Vantage MRI system.

May 8, 2007 - Researchers at Carnegie Mellon University have recently developed the HeartLander, a 20-millimeter long mini-robot that may be inserted using laparoscopic surgery, without disturbing the ribcage or deflating the left lung to access the heart.

May 7, 2007 - The FDA has approved a new indication for FRAGMIN (dalteparin sodium injection), for the extended treatment of symptomatic venous thromboembolism (VTE) [proximal deep vein thrombosis (DVT) and/or pulmonary embolism (PE)] to reduce the recurrence of VTE in patients with cancer.

VTE is the formation of a blood clot that can travel from a leg vein to the lung, with potentially fatal results. FRAGMIN is the first low-molecular- weight heparin (LMWH) approved in the U.S. for the extended treatment of recurrent VTE in patients with cancer.

May 7, 2007 - President George W. Bush Thursday signed into law the Trauma Care Systems Planning and Development Act of 2007 (H.R. 727) reauthorizing funding for the United States trauma systems until the year 2012.

The American College of Surgeons (ACS) strongly supports the legislation (now Public Law 110-23), which will increase the availability of trauma care across the country and ensure all areas are equipped with appropriate emergency medical services, thus improving the survival rate for severely injured patients.

May 7, 2007 - Data presented at the Pediatric Academic Societies' Annual Meeting demonstrate that premature infants with neonatal Respiratory Distress Syndrome (RDS) have a nearly 20 percent better chance of survival if they are treated with Curosurf (poractant alfa) Intratracheal Suspension rather than either of two competing surfactant therapies.

May 7, 2007 - InnerSpace announced the availability of three new small diameter scope cabinets that are ideal for storing bronchoscopes, cystoscopes, ureteroscopes and other small diameter flexible endoscopes.

Two free-standing cabinets are offered in either powder-coated metal or melamine, along with a wall-mounted powder coated metal cabinet. The cabinets house up to five small diameter scopes.
