Cardinal Health introduced its Esteem Micro Powder-Free Synthetic Surgical Glove, a versatile solution for procedures that require a more refined touch or for use as an outerglove when double gloving.

A thinner version of the Esteem SMT glove, the Esteem Micro glove is made from a unique and proprietary polyisoprene formulation that is nearly identical to Natural Rubber Latex (NRL). It reportedly has the fit, feel and performance of NRL, without any of the protein allergens.

USCOM is a CW doppler-based hemodynamic monitor that provides real-time information from either the right or left side of the heart.

The technique is entirely noninvasive, with no patient risk and no proprietary disposables. USCOM has been validated against bench flow models, flow-probes, echo, PAC and artificial hearts in animals, pediatrics and adults.

The system provides information regarding preload, contractility and afterload and has numerous applications in the PICU, ED, MICU, burn and trauma units.

The Pulsion Medical Systems PiCCO plus is reportedly the only hemodynamic monitor showing a complete picture of the hemodynamic situation, including flow, preload, afterload, contractility, volume responsiveness and lung water.

The measurement of extravascular lung water is a unique feature and allows early recognition and follow up of pulmonary edema.
The system is a comprehensive hemodynamic management tool providing information regarding cardiac preload volumes, cardiac function as well as bedside measurement of pulmonary edema.

Horizon Cardiology from McKesson Corp. is a complete cardiovascular information solution (CVIS) that includes fully integrated hemodynamic monitoring and ECG Management.

Entirely built on a singular platform, Horizon Cardiology integrates reports, images, waveforms and measurements into a central cardiac patient file.

Hemodynamic monitoring technology company Edwards Lifesciences Corp. announced the introduction of its Edwards PediaSat oximetry catheter, the first real-time, continuous ScvO2 monitoring device designed specifically for children.

Philips’ Xper Physiomonitoring 5 includes comprehensive hemodynamic monitoring and analysis and captures and integrates data at the point of care.

CardioDynamics BioZ Dz includes Philips' 12-lead ECG technology and AERIS (Adaptive Extraction & Recognition of Impedance Signals) processing that provides enhanced stability, accuracy and reproducibility in a broader range of patient monitoring conditions, according to the manufacturer.

October 17, 2007 - The National Breast Cancer Coalition (NBCC) recently released the results of a survey pertaining to how informed women are about breast cancer, showing that while 75 percent of those surveyed considered themselves knowledgeable about the disease, this was not the case.
The survey included responses from 1,004 women over the age of eighteen. According to the NBCC, the following results illustrate that women's beliefs about breast cancer are not always accurate:

October 17, 2007 - Varian Medical Systems is introducing an advanced range of afterloaders that reportedly simplify HDR (high dose rate) brachytherapy delivery and optimize treatment of cancer patients.

The iX range of afterloaders will be officially introduced at the annual ASTRO exhibition in Oct. 29 in Los Angeles.

Acuity Care Technology (ACT): Are there any changes to the overall meeting this year?

Dr. Stock (DS): The 2007 ASA Annual Meeting in San Francisco will be the first to incorporate all educational sessions of the annual meeting into learning tracks with the exception of Problem Based Learning Discussions and Medically Challenging Cases. Also, Scientific Abstracts will continue to be evaluated and selected by the Scientific Advisory Committee. Thus, our Annual Meeting now will be primarily based on content, resulting in a more coordinated, comprehensive and diverse curriculum.
