January 8, 2008 – The cardiac imaging community has until Jan. 12 to contribute to the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) public comments forum regarding CMS’ proposed National Coverage Decision (NCD) that would limit reimbursement for coronary CTA to just two clinical indications.

In the decision, CMS states that “[t]he evidence is inadequate to conclude that cardiac computed tomographic angiography (CTA) is reasonable and necessary under section 1862(a)(1)(A) for the diagnosis of coronary artery disease (CAD).”

Zimmer Holdings Inc. announced that its Premarket Approval application for the Zimmer NexGen LPS-Flex Mobile Knee has been granted by the FDA.

Zimmer says that a key strength of its mobile bearing system is its ability to be used in a minimally invasive procedure. The LPS-Flex Mobile Knee is compatible with the company's Minimally Invasive Solutions (MIS) Systems and Technologies knee replacement instrumentation.

January 7, 2008 - Chinese-based Medical device maker Mindray Medical International Limited today announced updates on new product launches.

In December 2007 the company released the M5, a portable diagnostic ultrasound system for international markets. The M5 will target traditional markets such as radiology and OB/GYN as well as Point-of-Care-Testing centers such as emergency and operating rooms, intensive care units and general practice offices.

January 7, 2008 - New polymerization technology may one day take the pain out of injections and blood draws, as a team of researchers at the University of North Carolina and Laser Zentrum Hannover recently used two-photon polymerization to create hollow needles so fine patients would could not feel them piercing the skin.

Clustered together on a patch, these microneedles can deliver drugs or draw blood efficiently as standard hypodermic needles. These findings are reported in the current issue of the International Journal of Applied Ceramic Technology.

January 7, 2008 – Dune Medical Devices announced new clinical developments of its breast cancer assessment probe, currently in investigational use, stating that results from a recent randomized clinical trial in 11 medical centers in Israel have underscored the safety and clinical benefit of the system in the intraoperative detection of tumors at the resection margins (positive margins) in specimens of patients undergoing breast conserving surgery.
