June 18, 2008 - Georgetown University, Gentag Inc. and Science Applications International Corp. have combined forces to develop a noninvasive method for glucose measurement using skin patches.

The three technology leaders agreed to combine their respective intellectual property and expertise to create a new method to monitor glucose, using disposable skin patches with wireless sensors and cell phones. The resulting products could eliminate the need for finger pricking with lancets to draw blood for people of all ages with diabetes.

June 18, 2008 - Derma Sciences said this week its key product, MEDIHONEY Wound and Burn Dressing with Active Leptospermum Honey, has been found in a large randomized controlled clinical trial to significantly reduce the presence of Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) in chronic wounds.

The finding was published in the June 2008 issue of The Journal of Wound Care.

June 18, 2008 - In an effort to spark a change in healthcare professional hand hygiene practices, Medline Industries Inc. launched its Hand Hygiene Compliance Program (HHCP) to hospitals and healthcare facilities at the 35th Annual Association for Professionals in Infection Control and Epidemiology Educational Conference in Denver.

June 18, 2008 – Bracco Diagnostics showcased its Cardiac PET Perfusion Imaging with CardioGen-82, a Rubidium Rb 82 generator and emphasized the advantages of cardiac PET Perfusion Imaging over the current SPECT, at the Society of Nuclear Medicine's 55th Annual Meeting.

June 18, 2008 - New imaging software that will allow physicians to more accurately diagnose and treat heart failure patients has been licensed by Emory University to Syntermed, an Atlanta-based nuclear medicine imaging and informatics software company.

June 18, 2008 – Numa introduced the NumaStore Software Only at SNM 2008, allowing customers to provide their own hardware configurations for the NumaStore Management software application.

Imaging department and IT professionals are now able to integrate this version of Numa’s image storage and management application on to their existing radiology department or enterprise server systems.

June 18, 2008 - Combined positron emission tomography (PET) and computed tomography (CT) scanning of patients in the early stages of ovarian cancer can enable physicians to determine whether the cancer has spread to nearby lymph nodes without having to perform surgery, according to researchers at the SNMs 55th Annual Meeting.

June 18, 2008 - Positron emission tomography (PET) could be an important tool for identifying non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma patients who are likely to respond well to treatment with 90 ibritumomab tiuxetan (IT)—the first radioimmunotherapy treatment approved for use by the FDA, said researchers at SNM’s 55th Annual Meeting.

PET imaging allows practitioners to identify patients who could be treated, predict how they would respond and identify relapses early in patients who have follicular lymphoma, a common type of slow-growing lymphoma.

June 18, 2008 – Naviscan PET Systems released new clinical data using the PEM Flex scanner in breast cancer management, the PEM Flex Solo II is a commercially available, FDA-cleared scanner that utilizes PET technology for the breast application as positron emission mammography.

June 18, 2008 - In a new study presented at SNM’s 55th Annual Meeting, technologists are using body mass index (BMI), instead of body weight, to provide patients optimal dosing of 18-fluoro-2-deoxyglucose (FDG), a radiopharmaceutical commonly used in oncology imaging.

BMI is a calculation that takes into account both a patient’s weight and height. Traditionally, only a patient’s weight has been taken into consideration when prescribing appropriate dosage of radiopharmaceuticals for positron emission tomography (PET) and computed tomography (CT) scans.
