The implementation of an electronic medical record (EMR) to convert from a paper chart record system to a high-tech paperless system can take a large investment of time and money and years to complete. Healthcare Information and Management Systems Society (HIMSS) Analytics measures the progress of a hospital’s using a seven-stage scale it calls the EMR adoption model.

Stage one includes hospitals that have installed electronic EMR systems in its primary ancillary departments the rest of the hospital relies on – the laboratory, pharmacy and radiology departments.

June 25, 2008 – Xoft Inc. launched the EXIBT Study (Electronic Xoft Intersociety Brachytherapy Trial), a national Electronic Brachytherapy patient registry under oversight from three national physician societies, the American Brachytherapy Society (ABS), the American Society of Breast Surgeons (ASBrS) and the American College of Radiation Oncology (ACRO).

The first patient was successfully enrolled and treated in the registry by Peter Beitsch, M.D., of the Dallas Breast Center and Timothy Nichols, M.D., of the Northpoint Cancer Center in Dallas, TX.

June 24, 2008 - Jefferson Davis Community Hospital (JDCH) of Prentiss, MS, is the latest facility to select NovaRad's RIS and PACS turnkey systems, in hopes of enhancing patient service and streamlining image reading and reporting.

June 25, 2008 – Draeger implemented its Innovian Anesthesia information system at Walter Reed Army Medical Center’s (WRAMC) new Acute Pain Medicine Center, installed to monitor patient vital signs and create a real-time electronic medical record.

Innovian Anesthesia integrates near real-time, life-critical information from patient monitoring, medical therapy devices and other ancillary information systems. It gives clinicians fast access to patient data, which can minimize the duplication of efforts that often occurs with paper record systems.

June 25, 2008 - MEDRAD Inc.’s multivendor service was added to its ISO 13485:2003 certification, reportedly making it one of two major providers of ultrasound transducer and MRI coil repair services with the certification.

The certification was achieved by demonstrating to the International Organization for Standards (ISO) that it has quality systems in place to ensure high-quality product and repair service.
