August 5, 2008 — Intelerad Medical Systems has signed a partnership agreement with peerVue, a provider of PACS-integrated, regulatory, quality and communications solutions.

August 5, 2008 – Hitachi Medical Systems America Inc. (HMSA) said the first OASIS High-Field Open MRI has been installed and is available for clinical use at St. Mary Medical Center in Langhorne, PA.

“As technology has continued to progress, the differences in image quality and patient comfort have been minimized,” said Daniel Cohen, M.D., St. Mary Medical Director of MRI. “We now can offer patients the security of a spacious design for added comfort during scans while simultaneously providing the most accurate scan results to aid physicians in their diagnoses.”

Philips Healthcare has developed a hand-carried cardiac ultrasound with reportedly advanced imagine quality. The CX50 CompactXtreme hand-carried ultrasound system is set to commercially release in the fourth quarter of 2008, according to Philips.

Primarily designed for echocardiography, the CX50 was made with many of the same features from Philips’ iE33 echocardiography system, providing clinicians a portable ultrasound that can be used for diagnosis, according to Philips.

August 4, 2008 - At AAPM 2008, Best Nomos featured its BATCAM Multi-probe, an IGRT solution that integrates a new multi-probe capable ultrasound system into the company’s core IGRT product, BATCAM.

The system features an updated abdominal ultrasound probe featuring color Doppler ultrasound, enabling IGRT for liver and pancreas treatments in addition to prostate and gynecology.

August 4, 2008- Hologic featured its MammoSite Targeted Radiation Therapy at AAPM 2008.

MammoSite places a MammoSite balloon inside the lumpectomy cavity through a small incision in the breast through a catheter. During therapy, a portion of the catheter that remains outside the breast is connected to a computer-controlled High Dose Rate machine that inserts a radiation seed. The treatment lasts five days.

August 4, 2008 - At AAPM 2008, Bard featured its new Simetry Brachytherapy Program, a complete system for the treatment of prostate cancer based on individual anatomy.

The Simetry Brachytherapy Program uniformly loads the periphery of the prostate with connected SourceLink trains, then optimizes interior seed placement, creating a balanced halo of seeds around the prostate to consistently distribute the dose across the prostate. SourceLink Connectors hold the seeds in place once it has been determined where they should be positioned.

For QA analysis for images from many different sources, Rad Image provides RIT113, a single QA package that can provides solutions for several imaging options.

RIT 113 is a Windows-based software with interactive, real time graphical user interface. It is designed for cancer centers that use a mix of conventional therapy, advanced therapies, IMRT, IGRT and RapidArc digital and film images.

Oncology Data Systems develops MUCheck a monitor unit/dose verification software for use in radiation therapy clinics.

Designed to validate dose and monitor unit calculations performed by primary radiation treatment planning software, MUCheck is a Windows-based, IBM compatible program that operates independently of any treatment planning system. MUCheck’s list of features enables medical professionals in the therapy department to perform calculations reportedly quickly and with ease of use.

Intrabeam is a miniature radiation source that delivers high-dose, yet is a low energy X-ray used for breast cancer therapy, neurosurgery and other radiation therapies developed by Carl Zeiss Meditec.

The Intrabeam System can be used to treat early stage breast cancer. The radiation dose is administrated to the tumor bed in the operating room, following lumpectomy.

CDR Systems offers Head and Neck Treatment System, a head, neck and shoulder immobilization system designed for unobstructed 360-degree treatment of the head and neck. An indexable overlay board is also available as well as a treatment couch extension that can be adapted to lock onto any brand and model of treatment couch.
