March 12, 2009 - Doctors at the National Taiwan University Hospital (NTUH) in Taiwan treated a prostate cancer patient using Elekta VMAT (Volumetric Modulated Arc Therapy), representing the first hospital in the Asian Pacific area to start a VMAT program.

March 17, 2009 – The National Cancer Institute extended its cooperative group agreement with the Radiation Therapy Oncology Group for an additional six years and awarded the group $60.5 million to carry out its research that involves brain tumors, head and neck cancer, and genitourinary cancer.

In 2008, doctors in the U.S. performed an estimated 36.7 million x-ray mammography procedures, representing a 2 percent decline from 37.3 million procedures in 2007.

March 16, 2009 - According to a March 15 study in the International Journal of Radiation Oncology*Biology*Physics (the official journal of ASTRO), preliminary results show that a shortened course of radiation therapy for prostate cancer called stereotactic body radiation therapy (SBRT) provides good PSA response for early-stage prostate cancer and has the same side effects as other treatments.
