November 1, 2010 – Two medical companies have entered into a joint technology developing and marketing agreement for imaging technologies for treating certain types of cancer. LinaTech and PerkinElmer will work to develop upgrades for legacy film-based radiotherapy systems.

Several upgrades are now available on Toshiba’s Viamo ultrasound system, including ApliPure Plus, Tissue Pure Imaging, a new high-frequency, tightly curved transducer and a DICOM structured reporting.

Viamo combines the portability of a laptop system with advanced radiology features. The new upgrades enable clinicians to perform advanced exams with greater image definition and clinical accuracy without compromising on patient access.

Three transducers for ultrasound imaging, all from Toshiba, improve the ability for clinicians to accurately diagnose patients.

The new high-frequency, tightly curved transducer, PVT712BT, lets clinicians view the smallest details that are especially important in exams of neonatal heads, pediatric abdomens and thyroids. The multi-use transducer is able to penetrate from the near to far field at very high frequencies, creating exceptionally detailed and high-quality images. It is available on the Aplio XG, Aplio MX, Xario XG and Viamo ultrasound systems.

The Titan 3T is a works-in-progress magnetic resonance (MR) system from Toshiba. The system has several patient-friendly features that are designed to improve the exam experience.

A works-in-progress 160-detector row helical computed tomography (CT) scanning system is being unveiled on the Toshiba Aquilion One and Aquilion Premium during RSNA 2010. Ultra helical scanning can image the entire chest, abdomen and pelvis in less than five seconds, which is 2.5 times faster than standard 64-detector row CT imaging.

Target CTA and the works-in-progress Adaptive Iterative Dose Reduction (AIDR) technology, by Toshiba, lower radiation dose and make CT imaging safer for patients.

Target CTA is a dose cardiac protocol for the Aquilion ONE that is designed for patients with stable heart rates, including pediatrics. When used with the company’s SURECardio Prospective, which can reduce radiation dose by up to 80 percent, Target CTA can lower radiation by another 20 percent.

The eXpertStitching function software is integrated into several Swissray DR systems, allowing certain orthopedic studies to be performed with greater accuracy and more precision.

The software accurately combines up to four images and allows the viewing of a single image. With the company’s single-focus stitching technique, the position of the X-ray source remains fixed with respect to the patient. This ensures the overlap regions are geometrically equivalent, resulting in identical images for the same anatomy and essentially distortion free images.

Sony Medical's UP-D25MD digital color dye sublimation printer optimized for ultrasound applications. It replaces the UP-D23MD, offering a smaller footprint and upgraded features. The printer will utilize the same print media as the previous model and adds an optional laminated media model with resistance to water and fingerprints.

The Siemens Acuson S2000 ultrasound system, release 2.0, is a multi-specialty platform featuring 2-D and color Doppler imaging performance and a wide breadth of applications.

Applications such as Virtual Touch HD, the second generation of Acoustic Radiation Forced Impulse (ARFI) imaging, Cadence contrast pulse sequencing technology and 3-D/4-D imaging capabilities to provide insight into complex anatomy. Virtual Touch HD is not available in the United States.

The Ysio, by Siemens, is a digital radiography solution with an intuitive color touchscreen. It is available in a wide range of combinations to suit both the imaging application and the available budget. For example, it can be arranged as a wall stand with an integrated detector; a wall and table system with a wireless detector (wi-D); and even as a mixed detector solution for high throughput and flexibility.
