Trends and new technology for cardiac computed tomography angiography (CCTA) were highlighted during the 2012 Society of Cardiovascular CT (SCCT) annual scientific meeting in July in Baltimore, Md.  Major topics included the development of fractional flow reserve (FFR)-CT imaging, perfusion imaging, imaging for transcatheter aortic valve replacement (TAVR) and analysis software advancements.

July 30, 2012 — Emerge Clinical Solutions, a creator of clinical decision support software, announced nuclear myocardial perfusion imaging (MPI) appropriateness update 3.1 that allows for diagnosis of both symptomatic and asymptomatic conditions.


Computed tomography (CT) vendors highlighted several recent imporvements to their imaging systems during the 2012 Society of Cardiovascular CT annual scientific meeting.  

July 30, 2012 — Novarad Corp. has installed its NovaPro RIS/PACS (radiology information system/picture archiving and communications system) Web-based teleradiology system as part of Emory Teleradiology, a service of Emory Healthcare that serves 15 non-Emory facilities.

July 30, 2012 — Radcal announced that it has entered into an agreement with Europe-based company Leeds Test Objects (LTO) and will be the exclusive distributor of LTO products within the United States.

July 30, 2012 — A study (Lee and Levy) published in the August issue of Health Affairs reconfirms results of previous studies that imaging use in Medicare is down significantly over the last several years (Moran Report) and that imaging is among the slowest growing of all physician services among privately insured Americans (Health Care Cost Institute). However, the list of factors cited for this decline is incomplete and the drop in imaging use is not without adverse consequences.

July 30, 2012 — A buildup of sodium in the brain detected by magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) may be a biomarker for the degeneration of nerve cells that occurs in patients with multiple sclerosis (MS), according to a new study published online in the journal Radiology.
