May 30, 2012  — ViewRay Inc., a privately held medical device company, has received U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) 510(k) premarket notification clearance for its magnetic resonance guided (MRI)-guided radiation therapy system. The ViewRay system features a unique combination of radiotherapy delivery and simultaneous MRI for the treatment of cancer. ViewRay's treatment planning and delivery software received 510(k) premarket notification clearance in 2011.

May 30, 2012 — Leroy Chiao, Ph.D., a former NASA astronaut, will share his experiences in performing and transmitting echocardiograms from outer space during a special presentation during the American Society of Echocardiography’s (ASE) 23rd Annual Scientific Sessions in National Harbor, Md., June 30-July 3. The session, “Hearts in Space”, planned for July 3 from 12:00-1:15 p.m., will give attendees insight into the medical aspects of the U.S. space program as well as the short- and long-term impact of weightlessness on cardiovascular function. The session will inform attendee’s clinical practice by relating remote diagnosis from space to terrestrial telemedicine.

May 29. 2012 — Viatronix Inc., developer of 2-D/3-D medical imaging and diagnostic software, announced that its V3D-Colon platform was exclusively used to perform a key study recently published in the Annals of Internal Medicine. The purpose of the study was to determine the feasibility of a laxative-free bowel prep for patients undergoing a virtual colonoscopy (VC) screening exam. The trial utilized a modified version of the Viatronix V3D-Colon software.
