When leaders at Methodist Le Bonheur Healthcare (MLH), a not-for-profit health system based in Memphis, Tenn., saw the opportunity to standardize their suite of diagnostic imaging solutions, they capitalized on it. Early-stage breast cancer patients who receive external beam therapy (XRT) are not at higher risk for serious long-term side effects in the chest area, including increase in deaths from cardiac disease and secondary malignancies, according to research presented at the American Society for Radiation Oncology’s (ASTRO’s) 55th Annual Meeting.

 Limiting the amount of radiation absorbed in the hippocampal portion of the brain during whole-brain radiotherapy (WBRT) for brain metastases preserves memory function in patients for up to six months after treatment, according to research presented at the American Society for Radiation Oncology’s (ASTRO’s) 55th Annual Meeting.



In an effort to guide regulation of mobile medical apps, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) issued a final guidance document for developers of mobile medical apps. 



The American Society for Radiation Oncology (ASTRO) released its list of five radiation oncology-specific treatments that are commonly ordered but may not always be appropriate as part of the national Choosing Wisely campaign, an initiative of the ABIM Foundation. The list identifies five targeted treatment options that ASTRO recommends for detailed patient-physician discussion before being prescribed.
