Cost of radiation therapy among Medicare patients varied most widely because of factors unrelated to a patient or that person’s cancer, reported University of California, San Diego School of Medicine researchers.

August 19, 2015 — A recent study by Mayo Clinic determined that adding molecular breast imaging (MBI) for women with dense breast tissue resulted in a lower cost per cancer detected than screening with mammography alone.

Grey Bruce Health Services’ regional hospital in Owen Sound, Canada, has adopted Carestream’s Vue PACS (picture archiving and communication system) and Vue Mammo workstations as part of its breast imaging program. Varian Medical Systems Inc. announced it has, through one of its European subsidiaries, agreed to acquire Claymount, a privately-held, Netherlands-based supplier of components and subsystems for X-ray imaging equipment manufacturers. Varian's subsidiary in the Netherlands will pay approximately €50 million in cash for Claymount. The transaction was expected to close early in August.

ViewRay Inc. announced in late July its successful completion of a reverse merger with ViewRay Technologies Inc. The combined entity will focus solely on the business of ViewRay, the makers of MRIdian, the world's first and only commercial magnetic resonance image (MRI)-guided radiation therapy system that images and treats cancer patients simultaneously. ViewRay will trade on the OTC Markets under the symbol "VRAY."

Patients with stage I, II or III breast cancer see marginal benefit on overall survival with irradiation of regional nodes, according to a new study from the European Organisation for Research and Treatment of Cancer (EORTC). Conducted at a median follow-up of 10.9 years, the study found that overall survival was 82.3 percent for regional irradiation versus 80.7 percent for no regional irradiation (HR=0.87 (95%CI: 0.76, 1.00), p=0.06).
