An annual exam using a key imaging technology could spare patients with lung nodules from unnecessary tests and surgery, while identifying the cases where the nodules are likely to become cancerous, according to a new study. Researchers at Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai (ISMMS) published the study online in the journal Radiology.

Cybersecurity was identified as an increased business priority over the past year according to 87 percent of respondents in the newly released 2015 HIMSS (Healthcare Information and Management Systems Society) Cybersecurity Survey. Two-thirds of those surveyed also indicated that their organizations had experienced a significant security incident recently. Released at the Privacy and Security Forum, held in Chicago from June 30-July 1, this research reflects the continued cybersecurity concerns by healthcare providers regarding the protection of their organizations’ data assets.

Women diagnosed with breast cancer and treated with one week of partial breast radiation after surgical tumor removal saw no increase in cancer recurrence or difference in cosmetic outcomes, according to a new UCLA study. Subjects were compared to women who received radiation of the entire breast for a period of up to six weeks after surgery. The study is one of the largest ever done on partial breast irradiation.

More than 5,000 physicians, technologists, scientists and exhibitors gathered at the Society of Nuclear Medicine and Molecular Imaging’s (SNMMI) 2015 annual meeting, June 6-10 in Baltimore. In addition to the more than 100 continuing education sessions, more than 2,000 scientific papers and posters were presented at the meeting and more than 165 companies were represented on the exhibit hall floor.

The Global Nuclear Medicine Diagnostics Market report from Mordor Intelligence revealed that North America accounts for the highest share of the global nuclear medicine diagnostic market, followed by Europe and Asia-Pacific. Asian countries are expected to show a growing trend in the diagnostic sector because of increasing diagnostic procedure demand and the rise of the medical device industry.
