January 3, 2017 — The use of a flat contact shield during imaging of the adult male pelvis can result in statistically significant radiation dose reduction to the testes, according to a recent study published in the journal Radiologic Technology.

Sirtex Medical Limited announced in December that SIR-Spheres Y-90 resin microspheres have been included as a Category 2A recommended treatment in the latest National Comprehensive Cancer Network (NCCN) Clinical Practice Guidelines in Oncology for colon cancer and rectal cancer. This designation denotes there is uniform consensus among the NCCN panel that selective internal radiation therapy (SIRT) with yttrium-90 microspheres is an appropriate option in patients with liver dominant, chemotherapy resistant colorectal disease (mCRC). This recommendation places SIR-Spheres Y-90 resin microspheres at the same designation as the recommended mCRC systemic chemotherapeutic regimens.

January 2, 2017 — Radiotherapy increased complications and impaired patient-reported satisfaction with reconstructed breasts in breast cancer patients who received implant reconstruction but not in those who received autologous reconstruction, according to data from a large, prospective, multicenter cohort study presented at the 2016 San Antonio Breast Cancer Symposium in December.

Autologous breast reconstruction is a procedure in which a woman's own body tissues are used to create a new breast after breast cancer surgery.

January 2, 2017 — Radiologists may be uniquely positioned to identify elder abuse, but they do not have training or experience in detecting it, according to a study published in the December 2016 issue of the American Journal of Roentgenology (AJR). As many as 10 percent of older U.S. adults experience elder mistreatment each year, and evidence suggests that victims have dramatically increased mortality and morbidity, the AJR article said.

December 29, 2016 — The Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) finalized new Medicare alternative payment models Dec. 20, which includes new bundled payments for cardiac and orthopedic care, including medical imaging. The measures are part of the administration’s healthcare reforms and includes new approaches to shift Medicare payments from rewarding quantity to rewarding quality by creating incentives for hospitals and clinicians to work together to avoid complications, avoid preventable hospital readmissions, and speed patient recovery.
