The Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) has renewed its contract with Elekta Inc. for radiation oncology products for one year with the option of three additional extension years. Along with the Department of VA the contract also includes the Department of Defense and other federal agencies within the 50 states, Washington, D.C. and Puerto Rico. The contract covers Elekta's digital linear accelerators, capable of IMRT and 3-D X-ray volume imaging for IGRT, developed to address the problems of organ movement and patient set-up uncertainties in radiation therapy.

According to a recent study published by IMV Medical Information Division, the X-ray radiography unit installed base, including both conventional X-ray and digital radiography (DR) units, is estimated to be 16,510 units at 4,860 hospital sites. Currently, about one-third of the hospitals have at least one DR system in their X-ray department, and over half have adopted computed radiography (CR) technology.

NovaRad has announced that three Virginia hospitals have selected NovaPACS for their image management needs. The three hospitals are: Clinch Valley Hospital in Richlands, VA; Southampton Memorial Hospital in Franklin, VA; and Wythe County Community Hospital in Wytheville, VA.

Purdue University researchers have created the first 2-D images of biological samples using a new mass spectrometry technique that furthers the technology's potential applications for the detection of diseases such as cancer.
Desorption electrospray ionization (DESI) measures characteristic chemical markers that distinguish diseased from non-diseased regions of tissue samples within a few seconds and has eliminated the need for samples to be treated with chemicals and specially contained.

Use of the FORE-SIGHT Absolute Cerebral Oximeter by CAS Medical Systems has been expanded to additional patient populations, including children over 40kg and infants.
The initial market focus is on high- risk cardiovascular surgeries, of which there are about 700,000 performed each year in the U.S. Additional market opportunities include a broad range of general surgical procedures and postoperative and critical care settings.

The GlideScope rigid stylet is rigid, reusable and used to facilitate fast, easy endotracheal intubations. Designed specifically for use with the GlideScope Video Laryngoscope, the rigid stylet conforms to the GlideScope blade shape (a patented design to improve airway view) and eliminates the need to manually shape the stylet to fit down the airway.
Unlike other stylets, the rigid stylet, made of stainless steel, is reusable and can be cleaned easily along with other surgical instruments, using an autoclave. The stylet is available in a six pack.

The KING LTS-D is a new supraglottic airway that offers superior positive pressure ventilation with gastric access. The system allows the passage of an 18F suction catheter through a gastric access lumen that leads to the stomach and has an anatomically shaped distal tip and cuff.
Easy to insert, the KING LTS-D has centimeter depth markings and results in minimal airway trauma. It is also 100 percent latex-free and is provided sterile for single-patient use.

An advanced software option for mechanical ventilation, the PAV Proportional Assist Ventilation Plus delivers positive airway pressure that is directly related to a patient’s inspiratory effort during spontaneous breathing. Ventilator support increases as patient demand increases, optimizing the patient’s contribution to the total work of breathing.
