Mayo Clinic in Rochester, MN and NYU Medical Center (NYUMC) in New York City are the first facilities in the U.S. to install Siemens’ SOMATOM Definition, a dual-source computed tomography (CT) system, which for the first time incorporates two X-ray sources and two detectors in a single scanner. To date, 10 Definition scanners have been installed worldwide.

A study by researchers at the Humboldt-Universität, Berlin, Germany, which was published in Journal Annals of Internal Medicine, September 19, 2006, stated that multislice CT and MRI are more effective than coronary angiography at detecting coronary artery disease (CAD).

Consorta, a healthcare group purchasing organization, has extended two contracts with Eastman Kodak Company as part of its plan to make Kodak digital imaging products available to Consorta Members through August 2009.

Under one contract, Consorta members will be able to purchase Kodak computed radiography (CR) and digital radiography (DR) medical imaging systems. Under the second, members will be able to purchase KODAK laser imaging systems, medical x-ray films and mammography films.

The Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) has renewed its contract with Elekta Inc. for radiation oncology products for one year with the option of three additional extension years. Along with the Department of VA the contract also includes the Department of Defense and other federal agencies within the 50 states, Washington, D.C. and Puerto Rico. The contract covers Elekta's digital linear accelerators, capable of IMRT and 3-D X-ray volume imaging for IGRT, developed to address the problems of organ movement and patient set-up uncertainties in radiation therapy.

According to a recent study published by IMV Medical Information Division, the X-ray radiography unit installed base, including both conventional X-ray and digital radiography (DR) units, is estimated to be 16,510 units at 4,860 hospital sites. Currently, about one-third of the hospitals have at least one DR system in their X-ray department, and over half have adopted computed radiography (CR) technology.

NovaRad has announced that three Virginia hospitals have selected NovaPACS for their image management needs. The three hospitals are: Clinch Valley Hospital in Richlands, VA; Southampton Memorial Hospital in Franklin, VA; and Wythe County Community Hospital in Wytheville, VA.
