April 16, 2007 - ev3 Inc. has received Humanitarian Device Exemption (HDE) clearance from the FDA for its Onyx HD 500 Liquid Embolic System for the treatment of intracranial aneurysms. This approval allows ev3 to commercialize its Onyx Liquid Embolic System to a population of patients with wide-necked cerebral aneurysms.

April 16, 2007 - Accuray Inc. recently announced that it has signed a co-marketing and distribution agreement with Siemens Medical Solutions , enabling Accuray to integrate its CyberKnife robotic radiosurgery system and RoboCouch patient positioning system with a Siemens SOMATOM computed tomography (CT) scanner, reportedly enhancing visibility of internal structures at the time of treatment.

March 13, 2007 - The U.S. Food and Drug Administration's image is so tied to the drug approval process that one of its other duties - the approval and monitoring of medical devices - is often forgotten or misunderstood.

In order to let the public know more about how it approves medical devices and monitors clinical trials on their effectiveness, the FDA has announced a new link on its Web site where the public can keep updated.

April 13, 2007 - Kodak's Health Group and MedLink International Inc. have recently signed a co-marketing agreement positioning each company to promote the other's medical imaging, information and software products throughout the U.S.

MedLink will refer healthcare facilities interested in purchasing Kodak's CARESTREAM RIS/PACS and information management solutions - either as an integrated suite or as individual systems - and related professional services to the sales force for Kodak's Health Group.

April 12, 2007 - The Medical Imaging & Technology Alliance (MITA), a division of NEMA, today released a report entitled "How Innovations in Medical Imaging Have Reduced Radiation Dosage," that indicates that innovations in imaging technologies lead to reductions of 20-75 percent in radiation dose for many imaging procedures.

April 12, 2007 - Engineers at the Johns Hopkins Urology Robotics Lab recently reported the invention of its PneuStep, an MRI-safe motor that does not require the use of metal or electricity and can safely power remote-controlled robotic medical devices used for cancer biopsies and therapies guided by magnetic resonance imaging.

April 12, 2007 - Toshiba America Medical Systems Inc.'s Aquilion beta 256, a scanner that is reportedly able to measure subtle changes in blood flow or minute blockages forming in blood vessels no bigger than the average width of a toothpick, in the heart and brain, was recently installed at a U.S. university medical center for three months of safety and clinical testing.

April 12, 2007 - In the first published nationwide survey of state Medicaid programs on "pay-for-performance" practices, more than half of all programs state that they provide financial incentives to health care providers for better quality care. Almost 85 percent of states plan to have pay-for-performance programs within five years. Researchers also found that most current programs focus on women's, children's and adolescents' health issues. The study is published today by The Commonwealth Fund, a private foundation working toward a high-performance health system.
