September 4, 2007 – Philips recently demonstrated its HeartStart MRx monitor/defibrillator that enables paramedics to transmit patient data from the ambulance to the hospital’s emergency department, at the European Society of Cardiology’s (ESC) annual congress in Vienna, Austria.

Upon reception of the data at the hospital, clinicians can use the ECG data to begin assessing what treatment the incoming patient will need. By allowing a hospital to begin organizing its resources before the patient arrives, the MRx can reportedly help reduce the time to treatment.

August 30, 2007 — David B. Samadi, MD, chief of the division of robotics and minimally invasive surgery in the Department of Urology at Mount Sinai Medical Center in New York City, performed a record five robotic prostatectomies Aug. 27 using just one robot.
“The da Vinci Surgical System is a remarkable tool,” said Dr. Samadi. “This is the ultimate form of minimally-invasive surgery, therefore, the procedure is not as time-intensive as traditional open surgery. Patients recover faster, and the technology also gives surgeons more time to help more patients. It’s a win-win.”

August 30, 2007 – Medrad has released the Pres Pressure-Rated Extension Set, the only extension set that is rated for computed tomography (CT) power injection and specifically approved for Medrad CT contrast injection systems.
An extension set, which is commonly used in conjunction with IV access, is a disposable tube set that attaches the patient catheter and the power injector tubing. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration recommends using only venous access devices that are compatible with the high pressures achieved when power injecting.
