September 14, 2007 - Virtual Imaging Inc. received clearance from the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for its new high-resolution digital acquisition system, FluoroPro, which reportedly provides a flexible and inexpensive solution without sacrificing features and performance.

The system consists of a high-resolution CCD camera, an image processor and interface kit. The camera is specifically designed for Fluoroscopic imaging and can reportedly be integrated to any image intensifier to provide excellent image quality in low light conditions.

September 13, 2007 — Novare Surgical Systems announced the successful completion of the first Natural Orifice Transluminal Endoscopic Surgery (NOTES) gallbladder removal procedures performed using RealHand HD instruments.

Santiago Horgan, M.D., professor of surgery and director of minimally invasive surgery, and Mark A. Talamini, M.D., professor and chair of the Department of Surgery at UC San Diego Medical Center performed the surgery on a 42-year old San Diego resident. Her gallbladder was removed through the vagina during a 1.5 hour procedure.

September 13, 2007 - Survival rates for U.S. hospital inpatients have improved since 1998, despite predictions that rates would worsen due to the increased severity of the illnesses being treated, according to a study by Thomson Healthcare's Center for Healthcare Improvement.
According to “Improvements in Hospital Inpatient Survival Rates, 1998-2006,” advances in care realized by U.S. hospitals since 1998 translated into the survival of 350,000 more patients than expected in 2006.
