October 29, 2007 - Researchers at Bradford University in the United Kingdom will be investigating the effects of humidity on hospital ‘super bugs’ using one of the largest known biological test chambers in the world.

The Bradford Infection Group (BIG), based within the University of Bradford’s Schools of Engineering, Design & Technology and Life Sciences, was recently awarded funding worth more than $325,000 to investigate an alternative strategy for controlling hospital acquired infections.

Biospace med’s EOS is a new digital X-ray imager for 2D imaging use, reportedly allowing images to be obtained with a low dose of radiation and permitting long length digital imaging,

The system is said to allow full-body, uninterrupted digital imaging with a single scan. Information submitted to FDA in support of Biospace med’s marketing application demonstrated up to 10 times reduction in dose when compared with commercially available film systems, reportedly without compromising image quality.

At RSNA 2007, CMT Medical Technologies (CMT) will spotlight its SmartRAD digital radiography system, featuring an integrated flat panel digital detector and CMT’s proprietary technology.

SmartRAD incorporates object-oriented software and connectivity to reportedly deliver high image quality, ergonomics and performance in digital radiography.

MedX Inc. will feature its NuQuest nuclear medicine workstation at RSNA 2007.

The FDA cleared NuQuest nuclear medicine workstation features diagnostic image processing capabilities for cardiac, general nuclear medicine and whole-body imaging. It acquires data from two gamma cameras and visualizes dual-isotope studies simultaneously.

Spectrum Dynamics will feature its D-SPECT Cardiac Imaging System at RSNA 2007, which reportedly provides high throughput, while maintaining and improving resolution.

According to the manufacturer, the system can complete a gated SPECT study in only 2 minutes as opposed to the 12-20 minutes of sodium iodide-based gamma cameras, reducing radiation dose.

Spectrum’s BroadView technology reportedly increases sensitivity by collecting photons with larger collection angles, using a solid-state detector design and proprietary image reconstruction algorithms.

Siemens Medical Solutions will debut its recently FDA 510(k) cleared 1.5 Tesla (T) magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) system that is reportedly more affordable, allowing providers to upgrade from low-field MRI systems or to add an MRI system for the first time.

The cost of the new 1.5T MAGNETOM Essenza can reportedly be as much as $500,000 less than other 1.5T systems.

Siemens Medical Solutions will highlight the capabilities of its SOMATOM Definition Dual-Source Computed Tomography (CT) scanner at RSNA 2007.

The system's high temporal resolution enables it to conduct cardiac scans of the most challenging patients without beta blockers and regardless of heart rate, and without the need to employ multi-segment reconstruction, according to its manufacturer. The scanner also boasts a 78 cm gantry bore, allowing for the scanning of obese patients.
