October 17, 2008 – Reportedly one of only a few of its kind, a surgical suite designed to treat a variety of brain and spinal cord injuries under one roof is now in operation at The Ohio State University Medical Center.

October 16, 2008 - Royal Philips Electronics opened the first magnetic resonance (MR) and computed tomography (CT) manufacturing facility in Latin America, as part of Philips' strategy to service emerging healthcare markets.

Starting in November 2008, the plant will also produce CT devices, making it the only site in Latin America manufacturing the two types of equipment. Customers across Latin America will benefit from shorter delivery periods and reduced equipment costs, said Philips.

October 16, 2008 - The Radiation Therapy Oncology Group (RTOG) and US Oncology Inc. have entered into a collaboration to increase patient access to national cancer clinical trials with a radiation focus in the community setting.

The collaboration means patients receiving cancer care at practices affiliated with US Oncology have access to RTOG trials for disease sites including brain, head and neck, lung, gastrointestinal, genitourinary, cervix and breast cancers. RTOG trials focus on testing the integration of radiation therapy with new systemic therapies and surgery.

October 16, 2008 - The National Center for Research Resources (NCRR), a part of the National Institutes of Health (NIH), announced it will provide up to an estimated $11 million over the next five years to research on imaging techniques designed specifically to better diagnose and treat diseases and analyzing sets of interacting proteins.

October 16, 2008 - Royal Philips Electronics and Celsion Corp. have signed a joint research agreement focusing on a new cancer treatment that combines Philips’ ultrasound technology with Celsion’s drug delivery solution to target tumors with high concentrations of a cancer-fighting drug.
