February 25, 2011 – The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has given 510(k) marketing clearance for new radiotherapy treatment planning and delivery software. The software, from ViewRay, is a critical component of the company’s radiation therapy system, which combines simultaneous magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and radiotherapy delivery.

February 24, 2011 – The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) will no longer require review or approval of technology that helps increase interoperability between devices and information systems. The move is being made to simplify the flow of information between medical devices and electronic medical record systems.

February 24, 2011 – A percutaneous microwave tissue ablation (pMTA) system will be unveiled at the European Congress of Radiology (ECR) in Vienna, Austria, March 4-7. The Accu2i pMTA system, from Microsulis Medical is cleared for use in Europe, the United States and Canada.

Alongside the Accu2i, Microsulis will feature case studies from key centers using the system.

February 23, 2011 – An extended Web application-programming interface (API) has been released for an Internet-based, real-time medical-image sharing platform. The new interface to SeeMyRadiology.com, from Accelarad, provides secure access to all functionality and data within the site.

February 23, 2011 – A new vendor-neutral archive (VNA) adds significant enterprise capabilities, including cloud-enablement, workflow services, and improved performance and scalability. DICOM Services Grid 5.3, from Acuo Technologies, also has enhanced storage virtualization capabilities.

February 23, 2011 – The latest addition to an entirely browser-based radiology information technology (IT) system was introduced at the Healthcare Information and Management Systems Society (HIMSS) 2011 meeting. RoentgenWorks RIS, from Brit Systems, is the final component to a fully integrated, modular Web-based PACS/RIS with a vendor neutral archive (VNA).

February 22, 2011 – More than 300 of the country’s top draft-eligible college football players will undergo an intensive medical evaluation at the NFL Scouting Combine. Barco is providing several dozen medical imaging displays for staff to conduct MRI, CT, ultrasounds, nuclear imaging studies and cardiac evaluations to assess the athletes' health.

The latest version of Oncentra improves external beam therapy planning and has GPU planning to speed dose calculations.
