A study of concussion patients using diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) found that males took longer to recover after concussion than females did. Results of the study, which show that DTI can be used as a bias-free way to predict concussion outcome, are published online in the journal Radiology.

June 6, 2014 — Harvey L. Neiman, M.D., FACR, former chief executive officer of the American College of Radiology (ACR), died June 5 following a long illness. Neiman was widely considered a medical visionary who dedicated his professional life to improving patient care. “ACR members and staff, the radiology community, and organized medicine have lost a dear friend and colleague, exceptional leader, mentor and luminary,” said Bibb Allen, Jr., M.D., FACR, chair of the American College of Radiology Board of Chancellors.


June 5, 2014 — Magnetic resonance-guided focused ultrasound (MRgFUS) using the Exablate system by Insightec Ltd. (based in Tirat Carmel, Israel) is a relatively new noninvasive thermal ablation option, U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA)-approved for treating and palliating pain from bone metastases. The technology integrates high-intensity focused ultrasound and a real-time magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) system in one unit.


June 5, 2014 — The American Society for Radiation Oncology (ASTRO) has garnered a record-breaking total of 2,874 abstracts submitted for selection for the 56th annual meeting. The scientific presentations will include up to four plenary papers, 360 oral presentations, 1,862 posters and 144 digital posters in more than 50 educational sessions and for 20 disease-site tracks and topics including radiation biology, radiation physics, palliative care, patient safety and patient-reported outcomes.

June 5, 2014 — A team of researchers at the University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston (UTHealth) Medical School has developed a new technology that can noninvasively image the human lymphatic system (also known as “lymphatics”). A fluorescent dye and commercially available laser diode and military-grade night vision devices were used to visualize the lymphatic capillaries.

The first ever xSPECT system, the Symbia Intevo fully integrates single-photon emission computed tomography (SPECT) and CT during image reconstruction, combining SPECT’s high sensitivity with the high specificity of CT and completely integrating data from the two modalities to generate high resolution and, for the first time, quantitative images.
