October 3, 2007 - Embedded RFID solutions maker SkyeTek Inc, said today Aionex has adopted its M1 HF SkyeModule RFID reader technology to streamline delivery of patient care in hospitals.
The readers provide Aionex’s Patient Response Platform (PRP) with the information it needs to monitor patient care, authenticate hospital staff members, and track process efficacy.
“Our customers utilize our application and rules engine to track and report timed events as well as to verify and locate of staff and patients,” said Curt Freemyer, CEO of Aionex. “As a result, our systems are directly involved in the day to day operations of hospitals and have an impact on the effectiveness of patient care at each facility. By combining our patented infrared solution with SkyeTek’s RFID readers, we can now provide our customers with a robust tracking solution for our patient response platform that operates with the highest level of usability and reliability.”
The Aionex Patient Response Platform (PRP) is an integrated communication and transaction software product that rapidly communicates and documents information from various sources to specific personnel responsible for delivering patient care and services. Aionex relies on infrared technology for staff, but needed RFID for patient wristbands to improve the overall usability of the platform.
Hospitals that have implemented PRP use RFID badges and wristbands to identify staff members and patients. Skytech said one hospital has more than 350 RFID readers and thousands of tags in use. RFID has also proved to be more cost-effective for Aionex and its customers, as infrared wristbands and scanners cost significantly more than their RFID counterparts, the company said.

If your enterprise is similar to most current hospital health information technology (HIT) architecture, you have clinical/data silos everywhere. This is nothing to be ashamed of; you are normal. But in the coming age of healthcare delivery, silos must be replaced with interoperability. One key to interoperability will be an integrated medical image archive.
