Radiation Oncology

Radiation oncology is a medical specialty that uses radiation therapy to treat cancer. The radiation therapy channel covers all aspects of radiation oncology technology. Radiation therapy includes linear accelerators (LINAC), proton therapybrachytherapyimage guided radiation therapy (IGRT)focused ultrasoundstereotactic body radiation therapy (SBRT), intensity modulated radiation therapy (IMRT), treatment planning systems and tomotherapy.

Alliance HealthCare Services, Inc., a leading national provider of radiology and oncology solutions to hospitals, health systems and physician groups, announced today that it has entered into an agreement to be acquired for $820 million by Akumin Inc., a premier provider of freestanding outpatient radiology services in the U.S.

The two-year project focused on reducing the use of extended-fraction radiation therapy to treat pain from incurable cancer that had spread to patients’ bones. Once a standard practice, the American Society for Radiation Oncology (ASTRO) has recommended against the routine use of extended-fraction radiation to relieve pain from bone metastases, especially more than 10 treatments.

 Mevion Medical Systems announced that the first proton center in the Mountain West, the Senator Orrin G. Hatch Center for Proton Therapy, has opened at Huntsman Cancer Institute (HCI) at the University of Utah (U of U) and began treating patients on May 11 with the MEVION S250i Proton Therapy System.

Ionizing radiation is used for treating nearly half of all cancer patients. Radiotherapy works by damaging the DNA of cancer cells, and cells sustaining so much DNA damage that they cannot sufficiently repair it will soon cease to replicate and die. It's an effective strategy overall, and radiotherapy is a common frontline cancer treatment option.
