New computed tomography (CT) dose studies and growing public media attention have made minimizing unnecessary radiation dose to patients a priority for medical imaging facilities. In addition, state regulatory agencies and accrediting bodies are increasing their oversight and regulation of radiation dose. Reducing dose while maintaining good clinical image quality, however, is complex.
The American Society for Radiation Oncology (ASTRO) has issued a new white paper, “Assuring Safety and Quality in Image Guided Delivery of Radiation Therapy,” that recommends best practices to improve the safety and effectiveness of image guided radiation therapy (IGRT), according to the manuscript published as an article in the online journal Practical Radiation Oncology (PRO).

More than three years after the United States Preventive Services Task Force (USPSTF) recommended against routine mammogram screening for women between the ages of 40 and 49, a study from Brigham and Women's Hospital (BWH) finds that mammogram rates in the United States have not declined in that age group, or any other. The study results are published in the online journal Cancer.
While most women understand the importance of health screenings, an estimated 72 million have missed or postponed a ...
Varian Medical Systems and Paul Scherrer Institute (PSI) announced a collaboration to further advance motion management techniques for proton therapy. The multi-year agreement, aimed at optimizing treatment strategies for indications such as cancer in the lung, liver, pancreas and breast, will evaluate strategies using a 4-D treatment planning simulator developed by PSI.
Nucletron, an Elekta company, has introduced its redesigned Flexitron remote afterloading platform. Flexitron emphasizes safety and efficiency in the brachytherapy workflow, increasing the clinician's confidence that execution of all workflow steps will proceed as planned for brachytherapy/treatment delivery.
Researchers at Karolinska Institutet have developed a method for assessing the effect of tamoxifen, a common drug to prevent the relapse of breast cancer. The key lies in monitoring changes in the proportion of dense tissue, which appears white on a mammogram, during treatment. Women who show a pronounced reduction in breast density during tamoxifen treatment have a 50 percent reduction in breast cancer mortality. This tool provides doctors with the possibility to assess whether a patient is responding to tamoxifen at an early phase of treatment.

SonoSim Inc. has introduced the SonoSim Personal Solution, which allows users to convert their own computers into personal ultrasound training systems. Handheld ultrasound technology is a proven way of improving medical care and reducing healthcare costs. A longstanding and seemingly insurmountable barrier to wide-scale adoption of these lifesaving devices has been the high opportunity cost of training care providers. The SonoSim Personal Solution overcomes this barrier by providing integrated hands-on ultrasound training, online courses and performance assessment anytime-anywhere. Trainees can access patients on-demand and virtually scan real-patient cases comprising a myriad of pathologies.
Aspect Imaging has announced the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has cleared the Company's M2 compact magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) system for diagnostic imaging of the wrist. The system is a compact, high-performance MRI instrument for rapid, just-in-place imaging of the wrist. Its design encompasses many of the benefits of Aspect Imaging's compact MRI design — affordability, compact design, patient-centric ergonomics, powerful MR-based imaging and simple, quiet operation.

The Obama administration has released the long-anticipated budget proposal for fiscal 2014. Although the document did not include specific reductions in reimbursement for advanced diagnostic imaging services, the fiscal 2014 budget would largely exclude certain imaging services from the in-office ancillary services exception (IOASE) to the Stark self-referral law and calls for prior authorization for advanced imaging services.
