Varian Medical Systems’ exhibit at the 2006 ASTRO meeting focused on the clinical deployment of the company’s technology for advanced radiotherapy, with a special emphasis on the On-Board Imager device for image-guided radiotherapy (IGRT). Earlier this year, the company announced that it had shipped more than 250 On-Board Imager devices to cancer clinics around the world, and that more than 60 percent of all new machine orders now include this important accessory for imaging, tracking and targeting tumors.

In today’s world, it’s hard to understand that a regimen of surgical resection followed by radiation and chemotherapy – a procedure practiced in medicine for over 100 years – is still the standard of care in the treatment of breast cancer.

The term “extremely obese” or morbidly obese is used to describe patients with a body mass index (BMI) greater than or equivalent to 40 kg/m2 or greater than 35 kg/m2 with co-morbidities. Extremely obese patients can range from 250 or 350 pounds to 1,000 pounds.
