Over the last 30 years, the mortality rate associated with ovarian cancer has only slightly decreased despite multiple efforts aimed at developing an effective method for its early detection, such as transvaginal ultrasound to visualize ovaries, measuring CA-125 levels and evaluating protein tumor-marker panels.



For the past two decades, breast cancer awareness has prompted women to take preventative measures that have helped them to beat the odds and live longer after initial diagnosis. But there is no complacency in the fight against breast cancer, and in just the last year, the industry has launched an arsenal of new diagnostic and therapeutic tools aimed specifically at defeating breast cancer.



Breast cancer is one of the leading causes of death in women, and women’s healthcare centers that specialize in breast imaging, surgery and treatment represent the offensive line against breast cancer development. As the adage goes, the best defense is a good offense.


Since the release of the Digital Mammographic Imaging Screening Trial (DMIST) results in September 2005, there is little controversy over the benefits of digital imaging in detecting breast cancer. The study found that digital imaging was as accurate as film in detecting breast cancer and 28 percent more accurate in women under 50 and in women with denser breast tissue.
