July 13, 2007 - The American Society for Therapeutic Radiology and Oncology (ASTRO) have announced the recipients of the 2007 Gold Medal, the highest honor ASTRO bestows. Jay R. Harris, M.D. and Larry E. Kun, M.D., will receive their awards on October 30 at the Gold Medal Ceremony at ASTRO's 49th Annual Meeting held Oct. 28 – Nov. 1, 2007, in Los Angeles, CA.

July 13, 2007 - The Progressive Policy Institute (PPI) applauds the Independent Health Record Trust Act, the first bill to give every American access to an electronic version of his or her health records and link them to a health information network, introduced by Rep. Dennis Moore (D-Kan.), Paul Ryan (R. Wisc.) and 33 cosponsors.

The bill would promote the creation of health record trusts that will let patients control access to their medical records and let their doctors see their patients' most critical information on a single computer screen.

July 12, 2007 - A recent study examines two comparable telemetry units with a 1:3 staffing ratio within a California hospital system to determine relative rates of variability in nursing activities.

Researchers found significant differences in categorical nursing activities (e.g., direct care, indirect care, etc.) between the two telemetry units assessed.

July 11, 2007 - General Electric Co. and Abbott Laboratories announced they have terminated GE's $8.13 billion deal to buy Abbott's primary in-vitro and point-of-care diagnostics businesses.

In separate statements, the companies said they were unable to agree on "final terms and conditions" of the proposed deal. As a result, according to GE's statement, the companies "agreed it was in the best interests of both companies to mutually terminate their agreement and discussions."
